Show 5 LEAP YEARS Yhy TFC Have Them and Reasons For Omitting Them at Certain Times The time required for the earth to complete Its circuit around the sun Is called a solar year The time required by the earth to make a revolution on Its own axis is called one day and for convenience is divided into 24 parts or hours The hours are divided into 60 parts called minutes and the minutes min-utes into 60 parts called seconds The time upon this basis for the Journey of the earth around the sun is 365 days 5 hours 48 minutes and 48 seconds We call the year 365 days and we see that if this was done for four consecutive years we would be behind be-hind time 2 hours 15 minutes and 12 seconds I was to adjust this difference differ-ence that we commenced to add one day to the year every fourth year and called the year leap year By adding this day of 24 hours when we are in reality short but 23 hours 15 minutes and 12 seconds we get ahead of time 44 minutes and 48 seconds every four years This we would be doing 25 times in each century and suppose we started with the year 1 in the first century we would be 25 times 44 minutes min-utes and 48 seconds or 18 hours and 40 minutes ahead of time So to avoid this they drop the leap year on the centennial year and by so doing get i behind time 5 hours and 20 minutes I This is repeated three centennial years and consequently at the expiration of the fourth century we would be behind 21 hours and 20 minutes I we dropped the leap year but onthe 400th year we add the leap year For every 400 years we have reckoned time we are 2 hours and 40 minutes ahead of time and this excess will amount to 13 hours and 20 minutes by the year 2000 In saying we get ahead of time I mean that we get ahead in our calculations calcula-tions basing the year on the time it requires to make the journey once around the sun The following therefore will determine deter-mine what are and what are not leap years All years that can be evenly divided by 4 that is without leaving a remainder are leap years except those ending with two ciphers 00 These must be divisible by 400 without with-out a remainder or they are not leap years |
