Show I THE POLITICAL ARENA I Arthur Browns Nomination and I I How it Was Effected I VOTERS WERE BAMBOOZLED BENNETT FACTION FAIRLY OUT GEYERALED IX CAUCUS PALED I Several Members Did Xot Know I What They Were Doing When I They Voted For the Candidates I The Manner in Which tie Brown i Men Succeeded Tallc of Voting Affoin Xot Coniiiienrted Tele grams Reeeived By the Victors I Colonel Trmulio Still Smiling Biographies of the Next Sena I tors I Now the smoke of battle has cleared away the members of the Republican party are wondering how it happened I I appears from the light which is shed upon the case by the evidence adduced ad-duced since the meeting of Tuesday I evening that the selection of Arthur Brown was one of the smoothest political polit-ical tricks ever turned here or anywhere any-where ese for that matter I will be remembered that when the call for the caucus was issued it was to the effect that the menbers were to I assemble and talk matters over without with-out any ones being bound by the ac I tion But when ail were gathered together to-gether and the leaders of the Brown and Bennett factions saw there was a full and complete attendance it was derided by both to attempt a coup I Bennetts managers believed up to the time the vote was taken that their tme man had the lead and when the ballots were counted he would be found as having received twentyfour of the fortythree Had the vote been an open one it Is a question as to whether Brown would have been elected elect-ed a it is claimed there were several e the members pledged to Bennett I who could not have thrown him over on a viva voce vote without compromising compro-mising themselves But with the secret I I se-cret ballot matters were made easy This was plain when Allison came out and informed Brown if a secret ballot bal-lot could be had he would succeed Brown i will be remembered made a protest against any secret proceedings I proceed-ings claiming he wanted a fair open fight But he yielded gracefully where I his lieutenant stated he could win two I or possibly three votes by acceding I The Bennett men too wanted a secret se-cret ballot They believed they were going to make a gain somewhere they I could not exactly tell by this means and were confident of succeeding Because Be-cause Bennett had counted noses and was supposed to know just where he stood He was confident of twenty four votes and was led to believe he I could get a pair additional This was the rock upon which he split Some are confident had Goodwin been nominated together with Trum txo tao election would have been the result re-sult Of course the selection of Frank J Cannon was assured But when the other candidates were presented there were several members pledged to I the two mentioned gentlemen and it is fair to prsume they would have kept their pledge for one ballot at least Browns men were > watching for a movement of this kind and so were the Bennett faction Both heaved sighs cf relief weighing at least a pound apiece when the Trumbo forces and the Goodwin corporals squad reframed re-framed from any mention of them Of course all this applies to the leaders lead-ers The rank and file were bamboozled bamboo-zled A great many attended with the intento of taking part in an informal in-formal meeting and although they agreed to the election in the caucus after they had been argued with at some length there were several who voted under a misapprehension I was presumed by many of the members mem-bers of the caucus that itwould require re-quire thirtytwo votes as many as are needed to elect in the joint session to nominate There being but two men up for the office they divided their strength and great was their discom fiture when told that Brown was the man The thought they were shut ting both him and Bennett out when they split upI up-I was a very smooth piece of work on the part of the Brown men and W5eld have been regarded as an equal ly brilliant effort had the Bennett forces forc-es won As it is the latter are disgruntled dis-gruntled while the former are jubi lant There was a great deal of talk upon the street yesterday over the result and a few were of the opinion that Brown should be retired and the cau cu cus held over again But this aain counsel was not regarded as wise by a major ity of the Republicans Indeed from the expressions any member of the party who would refuse to vote for the nominees of the caucus would be re garded as a man without honor or love for the party The Tribunes action in declaring Brown a man unfitted for the office and a nominee of a caucus of men frenzied and excited was commented upon bv many Republicans yesterday and all agree that the statement coming as it does from a man who was a candidate is in very poor taste Had the naner been unable to say anything good of the party nominee they maintain it could have preserved its own dignity bY maintaining a profound silence Thats the way i was received about town The general Judgment of those who have considered the question of the I merits of the candidates now nominated i nomi-nated is that Brown is by far the abler I man of th ° two Many wishes that he will draw the long term were expressed yesterday As compared with Cannon Brown is like a pile of stovewood to a heap of shavings Cannon will burn very bright for a time but when it comes to giving out lasting heat the attorney is the victor Cannon will be a pyrotechnic a rocket which goes up fills the air with sparks and other fiery cadooies finally coming down a blackened stick Arthur Brown was in
