Show II XO nonE PATERNALISM Under the above heading the Atlanta Journal of the 11th instant has a very timely and sensible article on the proposed pro-posed University of the United States It is so timely and so Democratic that we reproduce it entire The bill now before Congress for the establishment of The University of the United States should be beaten so badly that no other proposition of the kind will be made for many years to come The federal department of education is all right It collects and publishes valuable statistics concerning the progress prog-ress of educational work in the United States and is an educational agency which may be properly supported by the general government But the proposed pro-posed national university is another and very different thing It is a scheme of a set of impractical men who in their zeal for education lose sight of the limitations ofthe federal government We do not believe that the cause of education would be promoted pro-moted by such an institution while its establishment would carry the government govern-ment still further along the path of paternalism and make the way easier for still more objectionable schemes The national university bill should be killed We trust and believe that it will receive the support of no Democrat Demo-crat in Congress who has any standing stand-ing or influence From the very foundation of the government gov-ernment there has been a strong tendency ten-dency on the part of the general government gov-ernment to usurp the powers of the states And it has made very considerable consid-erable progress in this direction while the tendency that way is stronger today to-day than ever before so strong in fact that from centralization it has become almost socialistic A common school and high school system under the direct control of the United States would be equally as proper as a university uni-versity of the United States Education Educa-tion is peculiarly a function of the individual in-dividual states |
