Show COLLEGE ORATORY Competitive Debate Between East cm and Western Students NEW YORK Jan 15 Presidents Brodt of the Columbia College Debating Debat-ing union has received a letter from the Oratorical society of the University Univer-sity of Chicago accepting Columbias proposal for an Intercollegiate debate At a joint meeting of the Barnard and Philolexian Literary societies it was decided to try to have an argument argu-ment with some university next spring and a brief telegram was sent to the Chicagoans The Columbian boys favor New York as the battle ground but If there are any serious objections raised they are willing to go west The Chicago orators ora-tors say they wish to speak any time before June so that the New Yorkers will have the choice of a date Prominent judges of New York and Illinois will be invited to decide the arguments The members think that such a contest between the east and west cannot help but excite the utmost ut-most public interest This they argue will spur on the students to mightier efforts and the result will be a marked mark-ed improvement of the argumentative faculties In regard to the matter Instructor Ringwalt who represented Harvard in the annual debate against Yale for two successive years said Nothing better bet-ter could have been designed The Chicago debaters will prove worthy foemen for Columbia With the prominence prom-inence gained by this argument Yale Harvard and Princeton will doubtless be very glad to meet our representatives representa-tives next year and this of course will tend to make debating popular in all the colleges 4 |
