Show I W A KINNEY HERE Former Salt Laker En Route to Washington I ENTRUSTED WITH A VERY IMPORTANT MISSION Represents the Hawaiian Government Govern-ment a Annexation Commissioner Commission-er Was Formerly a WellKnown Attorney in This City I Hon W A Kinney a former Salt Laker but now a resident of the Sand wichIslandes and a trusted official of the government of the Paradise of I the Pacific arrived in the city yester I D C day on his way to Washington I where he will endeavor to impress upon President McKinley Secretary Sherman Sher-man and the rest of them the absolute abso-lute necessity of annexing the islands to Uncle Sams domain Mr Kinney can tell a great many interesting things concerning the country he represents According to him the white population of the islands fear that the Japanese will overrun the place and ultimately gain control of the government ice japs I I are coming in at the rate of 2000 per month and as the entire group does I not embrace such an immensely large I territory the chances are the Mikados I subjects will soon populate It In sufI suf-I ficient numbers to do just about what I I they please Mr Kinney believes the only solution I solu-tion to the Hawaiian question is an I nexation to the United States He believes nexaton I haves this cpuntry should recognize the importance of gaining control of I the islands to say nothing of the great benefit to be derived therefrom by the beneft intelligent class of residents I Intelgent cass there Wiliam Ansel Kinney Is the second son of William and Caroline Daly Kinney Kin-ney and was born at Honolulu on Oct 16 1860 He attended the grammar gram-mar school there and took a course at Oahu college afterwards studying law I in the office of A S Hartwell in Honolulu f Hono-lulu f and later he took a course at Ann Arbor graduating in 18S3 He entered on the practice of law with A P Peterson Honolulu and was afterwards after-wards a partner with Lorin A Thurs ton He was elected to the Hawaiian legislature in 1S87 and took a prominent part in the revolution of that year and has the distinction of being one of the committee of five who wrote the constitution con-stitution for the country which the king was forced to accept Mr Kinney visited Salt Lake in 1SSD and resided here until 1893 and in tha interim practiced law In partnership a portion of that time with Jerrold R I Letcher under the firm name of Let I cher Kinney Early in 1893 he returned re-turned to the islands and in the spring of that year went to Washington D commissioners dele C as one of the gated a from the annexation party on the islands to negotiate the proposed treaty of annexation of Hawaii to the 0 United States He was judge advocate before whom exQueen Liliuokalanl I was tried o1 attempting I t overthrow ana I the republican form of government ant I restore the monarchy on the islands i He is now special agent sent by President Presi-dent Dole to negotiate another annexation annexa-tion traaty with the United States government I gov-ernment Mr Kinney was married in 1S94 to Miss Alice McBride daughter of a I leading judge of the Hawaiian I Islands |
