Show d C HUA1PHREYS BILL Bitterly Denounced by 5000 Chicago People Chicago April 21 Five thousand Chicagoans I Chi-cagoans who are opposed to the Hum phreys bill which extends for 50 years the franchises of the street railways in Chicago and which is I now on passage in the Illinois legislature packed Bat II ei a1 Bf tery D last night 1 For two hours the I assemblage was addressed by earnest speakers among whom were exGov I ernor Altgeld and Alderman John M Harlan recent independent candidate for mayor of Chicago Rev Jenkin Lloyd Jones the first speaker scored the Humphreys bill because be-cause he said i proposes to rob Chicago Chi-cago of home rule and mortgage the I f reoff t future for the benefit of the corporations corpora-tions He appealed to the country mem hers and to Governor Tanner to save Chicago ExGovernor Altgeld spoke of the attempt at-tempt to pass similar bills two years ago when he vetoed them he said because be-cause he felt they were destructive of sa11 republican government In part he I InI want to remind you that for years It has been almost an impossibility to the legislature get any measure passed by ure of Illinois unless it is backed by tremendous influence or by boodle There are still many excellent men in the legislature but they are in the minority mi-nority Most of the men that go there now tell you that they do not so for their health they go there for business busi-ness Resolutions were passed as follows Be i resolved by the citizens of Chicago Chi-cago in mass meeting assembled that caJo every representative and senator from Cook county who votes for the Hum phreys bill is a public enemy and that he be treated as a traitor to his constituents con-stituents in his public and private life and that his name be Judas for he has sold his masterthe people for a few pieces of money and that the price of his treason be spent together with the remainder of his blasted life apart from the constituency that he has betrayed be-trayed and that although respect for the law may prevent the personal violence vio-lence due a burglar be It rtesoiveu < ina we citizens neie a5 sembled solemnly I steadfastly and un forgettingly set about to teach the people peo-ple the wrong done them to the end that deserved Infamy and ultimate ruin may mercilessly dog the steps of public thieves |
