Show PEARY AND THE NORTH POLE The American people do not like the Idea of an officer of the army or navy lighting his battles in the icwspapers They feel that that is a right which belongs to politicians and people who have domestic quarrels Therefore I is with much of a feeling of disgust that the people see the case of Lieutenant Peary of the navy who has been ordered or-dered to Mare Island navy yard taken up by the papers and his cause if any he have pleaded Thus the Boston Post says that Secretary Long ought to Interpose In-terpose his authority to prevent the burial of Lieutenant Peary in the Mare Island navy yard on the other side of the continent when he is wanted on cntnent this side to complete the organization of another search party for the north pole Plenty of civil engineers can be had for the duty to which he has been assigned but no one Is ready with the knowledge and experience and enthusiasm enthusi-asm which Peary has to lead the advance ad-vance upon the vole I then proceeds to say that while the honor of the farthest north now rests with the Norwegian TJansen the credit of the discovery of the most feasible route to the pole itself belongs to the < p American Peary that the next great I t advance In Arctic exploration will undoubtedly un-doubtedly be made along the lines I which he ha laid out and probably under un-der his leadership and that instead of exiling Lieutenant Peary to Mar Island Secretary Long should give him leave of absence in which he could put to better use his genius as an explorer To talk about his discovering the most feasible route to the pole before the pole Is discovered is I very amusing As the pole itself has not been discovered dis-covered while the most feasible route to I ha would it not be just as well to take out a caveat to protect the prospective discovery Lieutenant Peary may not be responsible sponsible for all this kind of talk about the injustice and impolicy of transferring transfer-ring him to San Francisco probably snot s-not but should discountenance i I service in the navy interferes with the prosecution of his scientific researches or the attainment of ambitions as an explorer he should tender his resignation resigna-tion to Secretary Long That is the way out |
