Show The late Judge Bean of Richfield was a pleasant gentleman and a public spirited citizen The writer remembers to have made a tour of Sanpete and Sevier counties with him In 1871 The occasion was threatened Indian troubles trou-bles as the result of the killing of a boy at Twelve Mile creek There was a big powwow held at Manti To it came Toas Utes from near the Mexican border Judge Bean and the late I Bishop Thurber were the interpreters but neither understood the Toas language lan-guage How to solve the difficulty was an important question A happy idea struck Judge Bean He thought the I Toas being from so near the Mexican line might understand Spanish and so he addressed them In that language They were perfectly at home in the language lan-guage and conversation between them and the judge went merry as a marriage mar-riage bell He had solved a difficulty that at first seemed impossible of solution so-lution |
