Show PUBLISH THE PE3TSIO2T LISTS I The Washington respondent of a leading Chicago paper says that a bill will be intro uce in congress and I pressed for passage this session providing provid-ing for the publication of a list of persons per-sons now drawing pensions from the United States for the purpose of submitting sub-mitting It to nublic scrutiny that the ultimate object is to secure criticism I anal information concerning those J whose mimes will appear There are 1 tens of thousands of persons drawing I pensions who are not entitled to them 1 and have obtained them by fraud although al-though it is difficult to prove It says I this correspondent and if a list of the names of pensioners in every county I or township was posted in a conspicuous conspicu-ous place with a bripf statement of the military strvice claimed the amount of the pension and the reason why i was granted it would doubtless bring down upon the commissioner in Washington Wash-ington voluntary evidence from neighbors neigh-bors and former comrades of the greatest great-est value while there Is no good reason rea-son why the pension list should not be made public A pension is a badge of honor a reward for patriotism and faithful military service and its value if very much reduced in the mind of every honest citizen when i is enjoyed by unworthy men and is conferred upon those who have no title to i I the pension list should be published publish-ed a proposed the revelation would cause astonishment in every commu nity he continues I would expose thousands of impostors and men who I T frformed e no military service or so little that they would not be able to I face their former comrades Every now end then the agents of the pension bu reau stumble over cases in which men who performed little or no service dUrIng dur-ing the war have been awarded honors which none but crippled veterans are entitled to and others who are in ill health or are disable are receiving I credit and compensation for disabilities than can in no way be attributed to I their military service This movement was not proposed by civilians or enemies ene-mies of the pension system I Is backed by the Loyal Legion and members of the Grand Army of the Republic who feel a pride in their pensions and are determined to do all they can to drive the frauds out of the pension office just as they drove them out of the camps during the war By all means let such a list be Dub j lihed and revised each year That there are many cheats and swindlers i jon j-on the list there is no doubt and they thould be gotten off perhaps this plan to publish lists of pensioners would do as much or more than anything else j to purge the roils Instead of the pension j i pen-sion rolls growing smaller year by year they grow larger and no one can 1 say when this increase will cease I is 22 years since the war closed and I i is a strange thing that the pension I list does not decrease There is no one > viio would deprive any person I justly entitled to a pension of i but i advantage of this feeling of regard aId honor for the veterans has been played j upon and taken advantage of By all i I 1 means let the pension lists be published pub-lished |
