| Show A BULLDOZING APTCMPP Caught napping on the Hayken matter mat-ter the halting Tribune tries to makeup make-up for its faIlure by plying its most congenial weapon abuse Gnashing its gums at The Herald is its diurnal exercIse The froth it brings forth may give it some satisfaction but it is recognized by all beholders as merely mere-ly the ebullition of impotent rage The Herald not only scooped its lagging neighbor on the Hayken arrival ar-rival but followed up the Hayken Interview In-terview with an account of a conversation conver-sation between one of the witnesses in the Hayken Case and a prominent attorney at-torney This puts a new light on the entire affair The Tribune chagrined at its continued failures in his matter mat-ter comes out with a most ridiculous though venomous attack on The Herald Her-ald for Publishing what our snaillike contemporary neglected to get The opinion of the lawyer is made to do duty in the Tribune as an attack at-tack by The Herald and the old exploded ex-ploded falsehoods about The Herald having been instructed to do certain things are repeated while the opinion that there may be more spicy edi torials in The Herald is expressed The status of the two papers in reference to pecunIary influences is pretty well understood in this city especially es-pecially by people who have had to put up by way of charity to the hand that writes and the lips that lie so glibelyabout The Herald We are willing to compare facts and figures at any time on this point As for spicy editorials they need never be looked for in the columns of our con temporary unless the drivel of senility and the mouthings of malice may betaken be-taken for spice So the pUblication of opinions pro and con upon the Haykell case is an outrage on pUblic order a contempt of court and an effort to intimIdate is it And that all comes from a source that has been trying to intimidate intimi-date and control the Fire and Police Commission and would if it were possible pos-sible intimidate and control The Herald The Tribune last Saturday attempted editorially to influence the commission in this way After finding find-ing fault witlh that body for permitting lawyers to appear in the Donovan case it said Another I thing it is plain from the developments that Pratt and Donovan cannot work together in the police department de-partment to try to force them to it is sure to destroy its efficiency One 01 the other must go if Donovan is dismiss the way is clear if h A is iJ J fi > i r reinstated Pratt should be at once called upon to resign it wont cia to I destroy the department That added to the private pleadIngs and bulldozings that have been known I tO be going on shows to What depths of dirty Intrigue the Tribune and its I chiefs will stoop The prolonged delay in a settlement of this case is a wonder won-der to the public who do not know what is goIng on behind the scenes The efforts of the Tribune peOple have been to force a decision not on the merits of the case before the commission commis-sion but under the threat that if the accused is not dismissed the chief will have to resign It is a vIle piece of busIness but just the kind that the TrIbune delights in There are other bulldozing attempts to which we may have to refer We have refrained from any comments com-ments on the Donovan case while it was undecided The indecency of the Iri bune in relation to it Is only excelled by its manifest malice towards the defense in that case And it is about equalled by its impudence in attacking The Herald for pUblishing the opinions expressed in reference to a public matter mat-ter nhlch are perfectly proper to be given to the pUblic as news The Herald has no taste for this continual con-tinual recrimination But it does not propose to l keep still while a bulldozing and blackguard yet flabby cOncern attempts at-tempts to gIve it a black eye The Herald has inso many instances forged ahead in the race for news that the TrIbune is beside itself with wrath That is what is the matter We would be sorry for its condition if disgust did not drive out pity |
