Show THE WILSON MESA Wire Gold In a Soft and Decomposed Quartzite The Grand Valley imes in its weekly week-ly summary of mining events in the La Sal mountains says We have receive word from General Gene-ral Passenger Agent WadleIgh that the Rio Grande Western will carry samples sam-ples of ore from the La Sal district for the mineral display at the mining congress con-gress free of charge Samples should be left at the Times office at the earliest I ear-liest moment not later than the end of the coming week We will see that i Is shipped from Thompson and properly prop-erly placed at Salt Lake Every miner in the district is interested in making this as complete as possible Captain A M Wilson who is working work-ing on prospects at the head of Mil creek came down yesterday for medical medi-cal treatment having injured his back while lifting rock He expects to be all right again in a few days Captain Wilson is a man who has had wide experience ex-perience in western mining camps and says he was never in a place that gave him more confidence than the La Sal mountains He and his partners Messrs Hayes Braijpy and Whited are building substantial cabins and are arranging ar-ranging for a steady residence in the mountains i The camps on Mill creek and Miners basin are maintaining a steady basis ana1 those who came in with the disposition dispo-sition to work are keeping steady at it and gaining confidence with each days development The DeArcy brothers are pushing work on their claims on Middle mountain The por phyry vein on which they are located which is about two feet wide at the top is increasing in width as they go down It lays between granite and quartz walls and fcuts through the mountain north and south Assay returns re-turns had not been received yesterday but they are working on the showing made of free gold in the pan Considerable interest is being shown in the prospect opened up by John II Shafer on the Wilson mesa This is in a soft decomposed quartzite Panning shows wire gold and seemingly in paying pay-Ing quantities no assay returns have yet been received on i A shaft is now down over 20 feet and a solid formation has not been readied The mesa is a place that has had little attention in the past as it has been regarded as a purely sandstone formation but the little attention already given it has shown that under the sandstone undeI t capping cap-ping are veins of quartz and granite The mesa is a flattopped spur of the La Sals and has an elevation of about 8000 feet and the surface showing would indicate that when the La Sals were forced up this was a pat that did not gain an equal elevation or that i was cut away more rapidly and sandstone capping since formed It lays west of the Geyser pass which show evidences of having been the center of a great glacier |
