Show WOMEN WANT MONEY Tax On Clubs Increased By the Federation Council CLUBS WILL WITHDRAW LARGE ORGANIZATIONS W NOT STAND THE RAISE Dark Horse Candidate For the Presidency Presi-dency I M Lowe of Georgia More Wirepulling That at a Popu ist Convention Curtailment of j the Proclivity to Talk Denver Colo June Important action was taken this affernoon by the council of the general Federation of Womens clubs on the increased taxation taxa-tion of clubs This advisory body will recommend to the federation the taxation of individual indi-vidual clubs at the rate of 10 cents per capita and state federations at the rate of 25 cents per club beginning with 1900 Under this new ruling an organization like the Chicago Womans club for instance would have its taxation taxa-tion raised from 10 to 160 biennially I Many large clubs declare they will withdraw if this Is done but Mrs Hen rotin and the women In power assert an increased income is necessary This was borne out in financial reports The treasurer Mrs Frank Trumbull of Denver said in 1896 the federation had a balance of 2366 The receipts the past two years have been S761 and the expenses 4979 leaving a balance of 3692 At the same time Mrs Julia I B Shattuck of Chicago chairman of the ways and means committee reported re-ported that 4500 was a minimum esti mate of the money needed for expenses the next two years There would have been an Indebtedness at this convn tion had not the officers borne many expenses from their own purses one woman having given 2000 This afternoon at the union meeting of state presidents and state correspondents corre-spondents the question of abolishing individual clubs from the general federation fed-eration came up for animated discussion discus-sion the idea being to make the national na-tional organization a system of state bodies This evening in the parlors of the Brown Palace hotel was held a reception recep-tion for the federation officers the state presidents and the state chairmen of correspondence At the Central Presbyterian church there was also a I complimentary lecture on Colorado vs Switzerland by C M Hobbs of Denver Den-ver arranged by the womens biennial local board I DARK HORSE CANDIDATE The dark horse has appeared in the race for the presidency of the general I Federation of Womens clubjs Within 112 hours there has been a decided turn of affairs and the name of Mrs W B Lowe of Atlanta Ga president of the Georgia federation is on the lips of everyone Though not known far beyond be-yond the borders of her state she is declared to be fitted In every way for the high honor The president of the Denver Womens club Mrs Sarah Platt could have the office if she wanted it but she stated positively today to-day she would not accept the nomination nomina-tion I her decision remains unchanged I the west will go solidly with the south and a large portion of the east with the exception of the coteries that will support Mrs Alice Ives Breed of Boston Bos-ton will follow suit Mrs Ellen Hen rotin by virtue of her present office is noncommittal on the matter but I1s Platt who may accept the nomination j i for vice president maintains that the j south needs the impetus that the honor i would give i This presidential bee which is buzzing buz-zing in the bonnets of these brainy women has induced more wire pulling than at a Populist convention At break I of day enthusiastic promoters were buttonholing but-tonholing the bebadged women Hotel j corridors and street corners are simply j t thronged with club women and on i every train came eager delegations I As preliminary to the opening pro gramme tomorrow today was devoted to a little of everything from securing credentials to chatting over cups of tea The plans for the comfort of guests are evidenced at every turn and the I visitors are greatly pleased with the I practica1 test of the hospitality for f which the women of the west are noted CURTAILMENT OF TALK I One important move is the efforts to curtail the feminine proclivity to talk The rule is no woman can talk more I than once on a matter nor longer than three minutes Fraternal organization I such as the suffrage societies and the 1 Daughters of the Revolution keep open i house for their sisters Social affairs afars I I were held every hour in the day an I important one being a luncheon this I noon by Mrs James Walker to Mrs I Tod Helnuth of New York Among the conspicuous delegates is Mrs William Jennings Bryan of Nebraska who gets I in free silver doctrine on the side Mrs Henrotins face fairly beams at the sight of her loyal following This I fourth convention she believes will be I I marked by coordination of forces as the first convention in Chicago was I I given tQ organization the second in Philadelphia to state federations the third in Louisville to the espousal of I I education I educaton I I |
