Show TEOMAS MAUCK KILLED j Rapid Transit Street Car Passed Over His Neck WAS CONDFCTOR ON NO3 GOT IN FRONT OF A TOliAILER A FELL His Neck Was Broken and Death Was Instantaneous Supposed That He Was Seized by Sudden Faint nuss Apparently No One to Blame for the Horrible Accident Funeral Funer-al Will Be Under the Auspices of Wasatcb Lodge Aan A 31 I Thomas Mauck a conductor in the employ of the Rapid Transit Street Railway company was run over and almost instantly killed by trailer Streetcar street-car No 37 yesterday evening The accident was rather a remarkable one I Thomas Mauck I was conductor on car No3 running out to Liberty park The motormans name is O J Laing On their way out t the park yesterday evening between 5 and 6 oclock they had a trailer coupled to the car At the corner of Seventh South and State both men got off their ca to push the trailer around the curve and onto the side track Both were walking behind I the trailer and pushing i at a fairly rapid rate and had just got around the i curve when Mauck ran ahead to change the switch He ran directly in front of the trailer car with his head over the rail In an instant one of the wheels passed over the unfortunate mans neck breaking it and mangling the flesh in a horrible manner MOTORMAN LAINGS VERSION O J Laing the motorman was seen and his story was substantially as above related He was walking be hind the trailer pushing and was not aware that Mauck ran ahead to change the switch He did not see the con ductor fall in fact knew nothing of the terrible happening until he felt the car inltinp < + n1t n u Uh7 VUULUUlb < which proved to be poor Maucks neck As soon as the distressing affair was fully realized by the motorman who became very nervous the wounded man was carried into a butchers shop on the corner and Dr Bowers the companys physician sent for Before he could arrive however Maucks spirit had taken its fight and the body remained only to be cared for by tender hands cre The only solution to the sad accident Is that Mauck either slipped and fell or was overtaken by asudden fainting spell The latter is probably the nearest correct theory as Mauck has been unwell for some time Yesterdav was his first days work for a week and Dr Witcher who has attended him states that Mauck was not very strong and thinks it quite possible that he suddenly became faint and fell to the ground TRUSTED EMPLOYEE I The deceased was about 27 years of i age He has been in the employ of the company for the past four years and was one of their mos trusted employees em-ployees He leaves a brother C and sister in this city the only relatives here The body was removed to Evans undertaking parlors on State street where an inquest will be held sometime I today Coroner Offenbach said he would not be able totf1x the hour a I the witnesses were somewhat difficult r I to get hold of The funeral will be > attended to by the Wasatch lodge A F and A 11 of member which the deceased was an honored |
