Show VERY MEAGRE RESPONSE Directors of the Chamber of Commerce Com-merce Are Discouraged EFFORTS NOT APPRECIATED BET THE STILL HAVE HOPE AND WILL TRY AGAIN The Chamber Was Never So Much Needed a s at the Present ime Captain 3Iulloj the Only One to Come In so FarOn the Eve of a Business and Mining Boom Eastern East-ern Capitalists Asking for Information Infor-mation About Utah The chamber of commerce in this city is an institution that ought to have the loyal support of every business busi-ness man in the city and every citizen of the state who is interested in its upbuilding I is now outside of the press the only agency in the state which is advertising Utahs resources I and disseminating knowledge to inquiring I in-quiring eastern capitalists Notwithstanding Notwith-standing these facts the chamber of commerce of this city is absolutely threatened with immersion In a wave of financial depression Such a parallel par-allel is not afforded in any city of this size in the country Cities have their boards of trade their chambers of commerce Salt Lake has the latter in name only I has been left for the business men to determine whether the people of the city and state desire to have the capital of the east seek investments in-vestments here If the result be I resul accepted ac-cepted the logical conclusion would seem to be that the business men are entirely unconcerned about the future greatness of our fair city and state The history of the chamber of commerce com-merce has often been told Everyone knows that whatever good has been accomplished has been by a few who have borne the burden while others in most instances have reaped the harvest har-vest I was expected that after a few years of dormancy by some supreme fused su-preme effort new life might be in NEW BLOOD INFUSED A new set of officers were elected These were representatives of the best business element of the city and all stand as synonyms for push and energy en-ergy That they are men fTho enjoy the fullest confidence of every citizen in the state all will admit They took hold of the chamber with a fulldeter mination to impress upon the businessmen business-men of the community the auspiciousness auspicious-ness of the present time for letting the people of the older states know something about Utah They entered upon the work with an empty treasury and poor support The chamber had members enough but the most part of them were in arrears on their dues The new officials took in the situa ton at once Two weeks ago they held a meeting and discussed the situation I situa-tion fully I a decided to make a personal canvass President Auerbach addressed a personal letter of appeal to every business man in the city and every heavily interested individual in the state placing the matter before them in a business light The chamber cham-ber needed a larger membership and more finances I was decided to solicit so-licit for new members upon the payment I pay-ment of 1 which amount would cover the membership fee and nine months dues in advance The object of this was to ascertain to what extent the directorate could rely on support Old members were asked to pay up their dues and likewise pledge an amount for a few months in advance Thus it was expected that the chamber of commerce would be recusitated but what has been the result DISCOURAGING RESULTS This question is best answered by Judge Colborn who was seen by a Herald reporter yesterday and asked with what success the present directory is meeting You ask what me success the cham ber is meeting with was the reply Well it is soon told Out of 60000 people in this city of which a great percentae are business men one single sin-gle solitary man responded Think of i One single publicspirited business busi-ness man in Salt Lake city sent in his check for 14 thereby saying that he will assist in building up the city and the state The man who responded to the appeal was Captain Thomas F i Mulloy I Under the circumstances we cannot can-not proclaim his name too publicly or sing his praises too loudly I wish that a monument might be erected to indicate that there is at least one man who can appreciate the work that is being done by a few who have the in terests of the city at heart Its discouraging The new management man-agement have done everything In its power to awaken interest in the institution in-stitution You see the result This is an auspicious time Before many months we will have may monts wl conven tions visit our city The visitors ought to be properly entertained We are in the dawn of a mining boom litera ture is needed to advertise our at tractions but without money we cannot can-not accomplish anything I looks tome to-me a if the people dont want the chamber of commerce Even only a few of those who were in arrears responded re-sponded to our call I think tlio amount from this source was about 39What What will be our plans for the fu tureWell the officers will hold another meetng next Tuesday We will discuss dis-cuss other plans and try again We have not given up hope yet It is I yet I pos j sible that we may be able to devise some scheme that will prove more ef fective If the people then fail to I fai respond re-spond nothing can be done That is all there is to i I LETTERS OF INQUIRY I Judge Colburn showed the reporter a few sample letters that had been received re-ceived during the day One was from a manufacturer of pianos who is desirous de-sirous of removing his factory to some western city He has the money asks for no bonus or site but is simply seeking the best location and desires a few local business men to take an fntftrfief in the Villcinocc TMiA r iomHot of commerce is the only medium through which such information can be given in a proper manner The business men simply do not realize the importance of such an institution and unless some interest is manifested we will slmply have no chamber of commerce com-merce that is all Judge Colburn said the directory felt very grateful for the support the press of the pity is giving and could only hope that the business people will awaken to the necessity of supporting the chamber at an early day |
