Show THE SHELDON JACKSON Plans for the Great College Will Soon Be Out HEAVY SUPPORT ASSURED TILL RUN UP INTO HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS Donation of Fifty Thousand by Mr Jackson Was Only the Beginning I is Expected That Funds Will Be Available Within the Aext Thirty Days When Sheldon Jackson the pioneer of western missionaries donated 50000 for the erection of a college in this city few people realized that it was the beginning to what now promises to be the establishment estab-lishment of an educational institution that will be second t non In the west Fewer still realized that I would mean the expenditure in buildings alone of upward up-ward of 300pOO within the next few years and still this seems now to b an assured as-sured fact While it has not been officially announced an-nounced by any of the directors of the college it has been learned from reliable authority that the directors have now the assurance of support to the extent of 5100000 The 50000 donated by Sheldon Jackson seems to have been but a small beginning to his interest for the news has been communicated here that I Is the founders intention to donate his estate es-tate in Washington D C and which is now valued at 5350000 Beside this amount anothei prominent member of the Presbyterian byterian denomination in the capitol city has decided to donate an estate valued considerably in excess of 100000 For prudential reasons the name of this donor is not given publicity as the negotiations ne-gotiations have not been completed Aside from the above assurances the Presbyterian denomination will undoubtedly undoubt-edly be heard from not to mention the National Bureau of Education of which General Easton who is intensely interested inter-ested in the college is president The directors of the college are doing very little talking but a great deal of work They expect to have everything In readiness to begin work on the plans for the building before the close of next I month Negotiations are now pending and it is expected that funds will be available within thirty days While the directors prefer not to talk or give to the public anything without knowing their exact position still it is learned from good authority that everything will be in readiness for the work in a few weeks The first building to be constructed will cost 50000 I is to be of brick and work on i will be pushed without delay until it is completed The site has been selected a previously announced through these columns and with the money at hand the directors of the institution anticipate an-ticipate no delay in the completion of the structure The plans for the structure will not go to eastern architects The directorate has wisely decided that none but local architects be awarded the contract for plans and specifications The style of building has of course not been definitely decided upon Much will depend upon the designs of the competing architects A view to architectural archi-tectural effect however will be followed fol-lowed out rather than to plainness and cneapness |
