Show I THAT BICYCLE ORDINANCE Dr Hevrett Replies to the Letter of Mr Pembroke To the Editor of The Herald Some weeks ag an article containing contain-ing much bad grammar and many misstatements signed uP appeared with aUtractive headlines in the Tribune Tri-bune calling me that erratic person per-son and giving me a general shaking up I replied a well a my halting pen would permit and the city editor after running his pencil through every passage sage that had any point to it hid it away at the tai end of the paper at the bottom of the page where none but an expert could find it Well here comes this same ready writer again in this mornings Herald with another extinguisher for me and now I have reason to hope for better treatment in my feeoie attempt to reply re-ply than I received before The gen tlemans grammar this time is better but his statements worse He says this matter was sprung ait the Sociail Wheel club five voting for and five against This mater was not broached broach-ed at the meeting he speaks of I e altogether I was a different matter alone wa II originated this plan and at rtfhe time of the meeting he refers to it had not entered my mind Farther on he says Objecting toit discussion a a club member I resigned from the club Since then several have followed the same course There ha been but one resignation from the club since Still falter The doctor still hammering ham-mering away brought up the subject at i subsequent meeting of the club and 1 learn tat at that meeting he was not generally supported At the meeting referred to every member present save one spoke emphatically in favor of the measure What would he call generally supported Father on The attorneygeneral of the United States has declared the bicycle to be a carriage I that I august officer could read that he would smile I should think I have heard the bicycle called all sorts of bad names but never heard it called a carriage before He then says Mr Neill in timales that he used to be of the same opinion I know Mr Neill quite well and will assert that he never intimated anything of the kind He ha a long list of dealers Who oppose the ordinance ordi-nance Some fourteen as opposed to It wen tyfour or twentyfive hundred Wheelmen who are in favor of the measure That cuts no ice I did not assume to speak for the dealers but staged distinctly I had seen but three and hey were in favor o i whereas I did speak for the wheelmen a I had conversed with ItW or three hundred of them and 95 per cent of those favored the ordinance He concludes If necessary mount two or three regular regu-lar policemen on wheels that they may overhaul violators of the present ordinance ordi-nance Now we have a plan at last The city OUt of its well filled tresury i to buy two or three wheels and pay two or three regular policemen that we may enjoy the pleasure of riding on the sidewalks when we ore too meanly stingy t pay the sum of SYs cent each per month for that privilege and big howl because are raising a great we are about to be asked to in a way we will be compelled to say yes to or ride in ithe street where by the way this same persistent objector said tome to-me he does ride and does not want the sidewalks and does not believe the rest of u should ride because the bicycle is a carriage I have no doubt he meant vehicle I intended to pay my respects to C N Butler but as this is now Ito long will defer that pleasure until tomorrow to-morrow Thanking you for past courtesies which have not been few nor grudgingly grudg-ingly given Very O respectfully B HEWETT |
