Show I I SALARIES OF COUNTY OFFICIALS Officeholding in Utah county has been a desirable thing In the past The greater part of the taxes as shown last campaign have been going for official purposes Let economy be the watchword now in fixing the sIt s-It will be in keeping with times and will suit the public if strict economy be exercised So says the Provo Enquirer What is true of Utah county is true of almost all the counties in the state Office holding has been about the most lucrative lucra-tive business one could engage in in Utah In Salt Lake county the fees of various officers have been so large that those who were able to hold their offices for two or three terms have been enabled to save enough to make them a very fair competency for life But this state of things is not to continue con-tinue the state constitution having provided pro-vided that fees which heretofore went to officials shall be covered into the state treasury This is as it should be for the enormous fees were far in excess ex-cess of the value of the services rendered ren-dered In this county the salaries of the different officials have been fixed in accordance with the provisions of law and placed at the very highest amount possible They are ample for the work to be performed and it is no disparagement of any of < the county officials to say that the salaries fixed for them are higher than any they WoUld be able to command In the open market I Economy was not the watchword infixing in-fixing salaries in Salt Lake county and there is little doubt that had the law permitted a greater maximum they would have been placed at that maximum maxi-mum The people are paying all their official whisties are worth |
