today unanimously unanimous-ly and enthusiastically endorsed a the choice of the Democracy of Pennsylvania Penn-sylvania for the presidential nomination nomina-tion at Chicago The sound money gold standard platform provided for him togo to-go beTore the people upon pledges the sixtyfour delegates chosen today to earnestly support Mr Pattison National achieved Na-tional Chairman William F Harrity A PERSONAL TRIUMPH second only to that of Mr Pattison Everything he asked for he got and his unit rule instructing the delegates dele-gates to Chicago to abide by the will of the majority went through with even less opposition than had been expected ex-pected The delegates and visitors made almost a hero of Mr Harrity besieging him with their attentions whenever he appeared in public Despite the apparent hopelessness of their cause the platform adopted and speeches uttered by the Democrats today to-day showed no indications of despair The spirit of harmony prevailed to a greater degree than for several years and everybody seemed to think the name of Pattison will work wonders in the state this fall if his candidacy for presidential nomination is endorsed at Chicago State Chairman Robert White called the convention to order at 1215 p mAt m-At that hour the hall was well filled with spectators and all the delegates were in their mats William E Given of Columbus was chosen temporary chairman OPPOSED TO TARIFF LAWS In his speech he said The Democracy Demo-cracy of Pennsylvania is opposed to tariff laws enacted solely for the protection tection and enrichment of favored classes and for the oppression of the great body of the people in denunciation denuncia-tion of such laws we believe that the necessary expenditures of the government govern-ment should be provided for by the imposition of either excise or Import taxes taxeThe The party which we represent is opposed toany change in the existing gold standard and this convention i true to those whom it represents must declare agains the free and unlimited I coinage of silV r i and in behalf of maintaining the credit of the United States at the highest point so that such credit may be unquestioned at administration adminis-tration of President Cleveland and congratulate the country upon the firmness wisdom and ability shown by him in all matters affecting the interests I inter-ests of the country
