Show A GAME OF POLITICS I A correspondent of the New York Commercial Advertiser has been visiting visit-ing Major McKinley at his home in Canton He says he has done his best to get from him a declaration on the money question McKinley parried all his inquiries very skillfully refusing to roy anything Nor will his friends say yes or no Yet this correspondent I says the impression created by the talk of these friends is that McKinley himself is for sound money at heart and would so declare himself but for the fact that the gentlemen who are managing his campaign fear if he does he may lose caste with the silver fanatics fanat-ics It is a game of politics pure and simple There is no reason to doubt that McKinley is all right on the < money question but why does he not say so Not even McKinleys warmest warm-est friend has been able to get a word from him as to what his own views are He deftly turns the inquiry aside and says it would be unbecoming in him to speak whild > the other candidates remain silent No doubt the Ohio candidate is at heart for sound money but he is really too much of a politician and too little of a statesman to declare himself positively pos-itively This is the weak part of his candidacy But then it must be remembered re-membered that he is playing a game of politics pure and simple Keen observers ob-servers of politics this year are of the opinion that it is not a good year in which > to play politics the people are too much in earnest on this vital question ques-tion of money to enjoy a game of politics pol-itics for the mere sake of the game McKinleys resemblance to Napoleon has been one of his drawing cards but it has not been wOthout its drawbacks This correspondent says the Canton candidate does noi ancy the much her I aIded resemblance to Napoleon that in fact the Napoleon of protection and the Napoleon of France have trot much in common No one whose pate is not addled ever supposed that they did The cry that McKinley resembled Napoleon Na-poleon in feature or anything else was bound eventually to work harm to the former and this McKinley has evidently evi-dently discovered If he will only discover dis-cover that playing the game of < politics poli-tics this year is a dangerous thing to do he will find his chances at St Louis better than they are today |
