ning Syracuse W H Ueazer Alice Man Nominating Senators John G lI Barnes moved that the delegates be instructed to vote in fa xror of the proposition to nominate senators sen-ators in the state convention There was but little opposition to the motion mo-tion The idea seemed so proper and so Democratic that there was no disposition dis-position to work against it Chairman Chair-man Roberts spoke briefly in favor of the motion and called attention to the advantages accruing from having the people express their will in such a manner When the matter came to a vote it was almost unanimous in favor I of the motion Roberts For Congress When this was disposed of Delegate John Fisher offered a resolution to the effect that the delegates be instructed to present the name of B H Roberts before the state convention as a candidate can-didate for representative in Congress The resolution caught among the delegates dele-gates like wildfire and it was speedily passed by a unanimous vote Then again there was enthusiasm in the convention in such a degree as to show the great esteem the members possessed for Davis countys favorite son The delegation will make a strong fight for Mr Roberts in the convention and it is confidently expected that his extreme popularity throughtout the territory will give him the nomination This concluded the business and the convention adjourned Convention Note There was great enthusiasm in the convention at times The Democrats are far from disheartened dis-heartened as was witnessed by the confidence expressed yesterday The ladies acquitted themselves admirably ad-mirably They will become a potent influence for purity in politics R E Egan the candidate for representative rep-resentative in the state legislature is a man wellknown in the county He is not unused to political life having held some responsible positions B H Roberts won the hearts of the delegates when he announced that he would bow to the will of the majority on the suffrage question He had been earnest and withal honest in his opposition oppo-sition he would now be as earnest in welcoming the ladies into the field of politics and he did so he said with as pure a heart and motive as anyone Teachers Institute The Davis county teachers summer institute has ibeen held in Farmington this week and will close today The meetings have been well attended and highly educational in character Prof George H Brimhall of Provo has been one of the principal lecturers and his instructions have been very valuable Prof Brimhail is well known and highly esteemed in this county and the mere announcement that he would deliver a public lecture in the Farmington meetinghouse last evening was sufficient to draw an audience au-dience that filled the room All the surrounding towns were represented in the audience Prof Brimhall chose as his subject Ideals and for an hour he held his audience almost spellbound with his masterly eloquence and searching philosophy A synopsis of his lecture could not do i justice He said God himself is the great idealist and the wonders of nature are his realized ideals Ideality is the fountain of perpetual per-petual youth the lodestone that leads onward and upward or that drags men downward Nations and individuals individ-uals rise no higher than their ideals They may not reach them but it were better to have an ideal up In the stars and not reach it by half than to place the ideal in the mud and stick to i No man should content himself with good enough Nothing is good enough but the best A man or woman with high ideals can live constantly in an atmosphere of purity and heavenly pleasures while others through degrading their scan s-can live among the depraved and leprous of the earth The companionship of books is a fruitful source of ideals and as the books are in character so yl high or low ideals be formed The class of literature that treat of adventures of criminals are dangerous and have been known to incite to crime Why then may not good books books of an elevating tone raise the Ideals of those who read them and lead on to grand achievements S The speaker was roundly applauded during his lecture and at the close a vote of thanks was tendered him I was conceded by those present that the lecture was one of the best ever heard in the county Note Labor day will be obseryed next Labor as a holiday The Democratic society is receiving numerous additions to their roll Christian Schmulz of South Weber killed a black bear measuring seven feet on Wednesday I was a large animal weighing probably 450 pounds J B Meredith and party returned Thursday evening from a twoweeks trip in the mountains He reports avery a-very excellent time excelent tme The ladies of Kaysville are entering into the spirit of the changed conditions condi-tions of things in a hearty manner Nearly all of them are becoming registered forthcoming regis-tered preparatory election to voting in the I I |
