| Show RACES WERE FIXED I UNBLUSHING ADMISSION OF FRAU BY TITUS I I One of the Most Contemptible and Sneaking Steals Ever Made on a I Race Track I I ST LOUIS Aug 31The Republic this morning makes sensational charges against Charles Murphy Fred J Titus and L D Cabanne three crack class B riders who participated in the diamond tournament given in this city on Saturday Satur-day under the sanction of the League of American Wheelmen There were three class B events on the program and according to two of the riders themselves I was fixed so that each of the three named should win ono of the events Cabanne the paper says was to be allowed to take the mile open the most important race as this was his home Murphy however so Ca banne and Titus assert broke faith and carried off two o the racessrhlle Ter I rill the Calfornia man honestly landed the third thereby shutting out the two men named Alex Lang I locat amateur ama-teur who heard the three class B men discussing the races afterwards said Murphy gave an explanation of hs conduct that his firm ordered him to ride out the races having heard of the agreement agree-ment The matter has been called to the attention of I local member of the National racing board of the league who will sift the charges thoroughly He says I he finds the charges true 1 will go hard with the offenders for its the avowed policy of the racing board to pre vent fraud of any kind in cycling racing The offenders may be ruled off for life I or for a period proportionate with the offense he says The punishment is len by the racing rules to the discretion of the board Titus Statement KANSAS J3ITY Aug 31Cabanne and Titus two St Louis cyclists attending the Fallmount Park races were seen by a Republic correspondent and asked about the charges made They not only admitted that this race had been fixed but that the three important races in class B had been arranged between them and Murphy The l only feeling seemed to be one of indignation against Murphy for not carrying out his part of the agreement They called him Judas sneak and renegade and said lie was a disgrace dis-grace to his profession Here is Titus statement That Murphy Is the most underhand racing man on the circuit sad Titus boldly We should have known better than to have trusted him You see there were just three important class B events on the card at St Louis Saturday Murphy Mur-phy came to us of his own accord before be-fore the races and proposed that we fix the three races so that each could take one We agreed and I was settled that Murphy was to have the mile handicap myself the two mile handicap and Dute the mile open as St Louis was his home and this was the most Important event on the programme Dute and I both stayed out of the mile handicap urging that we would not ride because Murphy was given 23 yards while we were scratch Murphy won with ease In the two mile handicap I did not win being beaten out by Terrill who had too large a handicap Then came the mile open event which had to be ridden under 220 or no race Iset the pace as agreed Dute following closely after with Murphy back in the bunch Within a short distance of the tape l pulled out to let Dute have the pole which he was unable to take however how-ever because his wheel was lapping mine on the outside Ths is why he also turned out What does that sneak Murphy Mur-phy do then but Jump to the place left open by me Of course I was too late for Dute to do anything then and Murphy Mur-phy won the race with ease Had I been run on its merits or If Dute had had the least intimation of Murphys intention Inten-tion he could have won in a walk I was one of the most dntemptible and sneaking steals ever made on a racetrack have been track but only what mght expected of a man like Murphy AH Three Suspended > ST LOUIS Aug 31The following telegram was sent today to George D Gideon chairman of the National Racing Board League of American Wheelman
