Show WEBERi COUNTYS RESOLUTIONS The suggestion made by the Territorial Territor-ial Democratic committee that the counties consider the propriety of naming nam-ing United States Senators has ibeen widely considered throughout the territory ter-ritory There has been much diversity of opinion as to the advisability of naming them and Democrats of unquestioned un-questioned loyalty to the party and widely experienced in such matters i have taken opposing views on this I most important question Several of the counties have declined to express any opinion while a number num-ber of others have expressed themselves them-selves favorable to the naming by the territorial convention of those incorruptible incor-ruptible talented and stalwart champions cham-pions of the principles of Democracy Messrs Rawlins and Thatcher One county Weber has expressed its opinion that it would be unwise and inexpedient to pledge the legislative legisla-tive nominees in advance to support Senator any man for United States from Utah This being the sentiment of the Democrats of that county it I was plainly their right even their duty to express it But the convention conven-tion did not stop at this action It instructed its delegates not to vote 01 take part in discussing the proposition to nominate candidates except to announce an-nounce through the chairman of the delegation that the Democracy of We I ber county declines to be bound by any action of the state convention relative to the nomination of candidates for the United States Senate Weber feels that the success of the campaign is jeopardized yet Weber declines to discuss the subject with the other counties Weber expects that defeat will follow the naming of the Senators yet will stand mute permitting per-mitting the convention to take those steps that in her opinion will lead to certain destruction Is this the part of wisdom It suggests sug-gests that Weber lacks confidence in the strength of her position or is suspicious sus-picious of the intentions of her associate asso-ciate counties But Weber does not stop here she is not only opposed to the suggestion for reasons which she will decline to divulge di-vulge but she expresses her intention of not being bound by the action of the territorial convention on a matter which it would seem to be eminently proper and Democratic for it to consider con-sider Is this not carrying opinions to a dangerous and unDemocratic length Are the Democrats of all the other counties less loyal to the party and less concerned in its success than our misguided friends in Weber We believe be-lieve they are quite as loyal The Democrats of no one county have a monopoly on the results of Democratic success The Democrats of the other counties are not going to do anything which after a full and fair discussion they believe will render ren-der party success less probable Democrats have usually proceeded on the theory that majorities should rule under such circumstances and that a minority should yield its opinions opin-ions however set to the equally honest hon-est and disinterested sentiments of the majority Weber has violated this rule in this instance She not only declines de-clines to discuss but to conform She should reconsider and fight the question out in open convention and if she loses should yield a hearty support to the action of the convention conven-tion The Democracy of Utah owes I much to Weber for her splendid record rec-ord in the past and views with alarm the existence of a sentiment that I may tend to dim that record I |
