Show CALVE IS ORIGINAL Has a WellDresscI and Mysterious Stranger FoPovr Her Aleut and Threaten to Shoot Her Nest I New York Feb IS While Mme I Calve was singing Marguerite In I Faust last evening at the Metropolitan tan Opera House detectives were guarding the entrance waiting to arrest a mvterlous man who an hour earlier had told the sopranos companion earler panion Mme Walewska that If Mme I Calve did not accord him an interview after the performance he would shoot her herThe singer on several occasions recently re-cently had received incoherent letters in terms of endearment and begging for an Interview I was not until last evening eve-ning that the author began to threaten He attempted to obtain an interview with Mme Calve at the Plaza hotel at 6 oclock and failing left after making the threat referred to Mme Calve was extremely nervous when she learned of the mans Insane talk from her companion but she drove to the opera house as usual only to find that he had preceded her The man flitted away before he could be pointed out to an officer and to make sure that he should have no chance to carry out his threat a special force of detectives were summoned from police headquarters and every entrance was guarded I is not certain that the man whom Mme Calve saw when she reached the opera house was the one with whom her companion talked at the Plaza but the singer was convinced from the description that i wds the same and fearing an attempt to kill her she could not be persuaded to leave her carriage until the pavement at the stage door had been cleared and a strong body guard had surrounded her I Is supposed from the letters Mme Calve received that this threatening admirer saw her when Carmen was sung in New Haven two weeks ago and that his mania dated from her ap t < = i I I > r pearance there in her greatest role At all events she received on Feb 13 the first letter quickly followed by others all expressing ardent admiration but evidently the work of an insane person per-son On Friday the singer a somewhat some-what alarmed at receiving another letter let-ter Mme Calve threw this leter down with the others telling her companion to keep them in case an appeal to the police became necessary That necessity neces-sity arose last evening A tall welldressed man about 40 years old with a large flowing mustache mus-tache and wearing a long gray ulster entered the Plaza hotel last evening at 6 oclock and asked that his card be sent up to Mme Calve adding that he had an appointment with her and that she would see him The card was returned turned with a message to the effect that Mme Calve was engaged and that she did not know him Very well he said then I will go tq the opera house and If she does not accord me an Interview after the performance per-formance and a kindly onsI will shoot her Then he strode away and had turned ture into Fortyeighth street before the astonished as-tonished waiter and Mme Walewska could decide what to do about I Mme Calve promptly sought out Mr Grau and reported the matter to him Once In the opera house she speedily recovered her composure and made light of the iratter Mr Grau took the letters which she had brought with her and soon afterward handed them to detectives whom he summoned from police headquarters A most determined effort will be made to arrest the man of threats and mystery |
