Show BRAVERY ZEDII CREELMAN GETS A GOLD MEDAL MDA AND S1CO Secretary Herbert Makes the Presentation Pres-entation Personally Complimentary Complimen-tary Words For Naval Cadet tr Gherardi of the Maine I I I Charleston S C Feb IS Charleston I Charles-ton was congested throughout the day by thousands of strangers from Sout I I Carolina and the neighboring states who had come to thecity to see Admiral Ad-miral Bunces fleet that has been I blockading this port pass in review before Secretary of the Navy Herbert Her-bert Among the specially invited guests were Governor Ellerbee of South Carolina Caro-lina and all the state officers senators and legislators Secretary Herbert and I j a party of friends arrived in the city I from Washington in a special car at 6 oclock this morning They were met at the depot by a committee consisting I consist-ing of Mayor Smyth and other city officials As the secretary stepped from his car a salute of 27 suns was fired by detachments from the First I division of South Carolina reserves The party was then escorted to the Charleston hotel where breakfast was served They were subsequently escorted es-corted to the custom house dock where they boarded the revenue cutter Col fax The secretary was saluted as he boarded the ships all the sailors ueiag drawn up In manofwar fashion The day was an ideal one In the city i had been so warm that wraps were uncomfortable but on the watet toa coats were not out of place At the entrance to the jetties an unforeseen unfore-seen trouble arose The cutter and its train of pleasure craft ran full into a heavy fog and when the flagship was picked up in the mist Admiral Bunce received a summons from the secretary and came alongside in his cutter The moment he stepped aboard his pennant was run up and the little cutter Le came the flagship The admiral was told by the secretary that he desired to board the battlcshlo batttshlu Maine to present Seaman Creelman with a medal awarded him fnr MO In tinguished conduct during the storm stor Sn with both Secretary Herbert and Admiral Bunce aboard the cutter once more got under way Captain Crown Insnlelds of the Maine was hailed and Informed that the two officials would board his ship The transfer was made without trouble the jackles and offl cials receiving their superior officers with their customary salute and ofcer for4 ality With their ships al Vih crew drawn up on deck the captain gave orders for Naval Cadet Gherardi his gunboat crew and Seaman W J Creelman to step forwar Addressing them Sec retary Herbert spoke of their gallant galant conduct during the storm They had he said made him proud of the navy and then singling out Creelman the secretary presented him with the gold medal and an envelope containing 100 with a few words in commendation of his gallant deed commendaton The official ceremonies on board the ships having been concluded the offi cials attended a banquet at the Charleston hotel Secretary Herbert re sponding to the toast Our Navy |
