Show WHAT TO DO WITH HANNA What shall be done with Hanna is getting to be a question of national interest if not of national Importance Discussing the question the Cleveland Plain Dealer says If Mr Hanna is anxious to be senator sena-tor as is now generally conceded to be the case and Governor Bushnell will not appoint him about which there can hardly be two opinions the best thing for Mr Hanna to do is to go into the cabinet for the present Mr McKinley wants him there and has kept the place of postmastergeneral open for tim With the senate still in view it Is the best cabinet position for Mr Hanna and he will be unwise not to take It Consider the situation Governor Bushnell appoints a Foraker appendix until the legislature elects a senator in January next Then the Foraker crowd go to work in earnest to secure the legislation that does the electing for the remainder of the present term and also for the full term of six years following Foraker and his Me Too in the senate use the influence of their position upon McKinley to prevent his Interference in Ohio affairs during the election of the legislature Mr Hanna will fight of course but out of office he will fight at a disadvantage against Foraker doubly intrenched in the United States senate and fortified in the state capital I But should Mr Hanna go into the postoffice department there would be a change in the situation Senator For aker and his appendix could trouble President McKinley to some extent in the confirmation of presidential appointees ap-pointees in Ohio but the commissions of some of these do not expire for awhile a-while and in the meantime the senatorial sena-torial pair would do little more than make faces and suggest what they will do when the time comes As post mastergeneral Mr Hanna would have the whole Ohio division of the army of fourthclass postmasters under his command They are not yet in the classified service Fourthclass post offices can be made useful in the election elec-tion of L state legislature and if Post masterGeneral Hanna would not know how to turn them to account he is not the skillful campaign general he is universally uni-versally taken to be When the legislature meets to elect a senator for the remainder of the present and the whole of the succeeding succeed-ing term the administration ship of President McKinley will be fairly underway under-way and the pilot can leave the commander com-mander to lis own resources Then Mr Hanna can step quietly from the cabinet cabi-net into the senate pitching Forakers man overboard and giving Mr Foraker himself notice that if he doesnt keep quiet and agreeable he will be tumbled to the bottom of the boat and sat down upon hard This plan would effectually dispose of Hanna and relieve Ohio politics of a grave situation Let it be done for the country has almost as much interest inter-est in Ohio politics as in Ohio wool |
