| Show LIBELING THESTATE The people of Utah are a patient people Irrespective of race creed larty or occupation they have proved this quality In no other state of the Union would citizens and taxpayers suffer themselves them-selves to be libeled day after day and veek after week as the Salt Lake Tribune Tri-bune has libeled them I would have to stop somewhere and sometime and somehow Business men tire of 3 constant agitation ation begun for political purposes and continued throughout the year with the evident intent of humiliating a majority who disregard the threats of a wouldbe boss I Residents of whatever religious or political belief sicken of the constant I eiteration of suspicions based on I promised proofs that never materialize material-Ize izeBusiness Business interests are bound to suffer suf-fer and are now suffering in a community com-munity which is advertised persistently persistent-ly from its very midst a the abiding I place of 3 lawless and immoral people The organ denies that it has said these things Its own columns furnish I the contradiction I I has expressly stated or Intimated I directly or by implication thefollow ing charges 1 That Utah was admitted into the Union under false pretences The inference erence is that the state is unworthy of confidence 2 That the people of Utah are ledgebreakers From which outside capitalists may b led to believe that I contracts are lightly Heated in the stateS 3 That the people of Utah elected a I man to office because he was a lawbreaker breaker By which the organ tries to create the impression that the people of Utah have no regard for law regd 4 That immorality and corruption I are taught by the leaders of the domi nant church Wherefore the people II trusted who sustain such leaders are not to be I i 5 That plural marriages are still beIng be-Ing contracted although every church I official denies it Which means that the organ regards every such official as a falsifier 6 That the elders of the church are performing ceremonies for plural marriages mar-riages As this includes almost the entire male me ership it is saying I I substantially that threefourths of the I people of the state are lawbreakers and liars I Its charges are not specific They I are general They apply to all the people They reflect upon the entire I population of the state They create i distrust wherever they are circulated and the organ circulates them where ever they will create distrust I a man break the law in another state and his neighbor feel a aggrieved ag-grieved as the Tribune assumes tot i to-t I he will swear out a complaint and I take the object of his indignation into I court he will not mount a housetop to proclaim the matter to the world In other states people are led to b here by the attitude of the Tribune that the courts of Utah refuse to punish pun-ish lawbreakers that the officers will not arrest them that justice can not be obtained in the tribunals nor the laws enforced in the state What other reason can they assign I for this appeal of an untried case to the sentiment of a nation How long are the people of Utah going to permit the professional mud thrower to blacken their reputation to defame their state to spread distrust of their honesty to discount their credit to question their credibility and discredit their courts of justice I There is said to be a limit to forbearance forbear-ance a point where it ceases to be 3 virtue How long is the patience of Utah people to be tried How long is the tolerance of Utah business men to be abused 4 Hw lnng is the Tribune to b hu 11 < FL stage like a spoiled child of the second |
