Show MILES Ai THE BEEF 1 J 1 Court of Inquiry Opens For Business 5 Tomorrow J + ATTITUDE OF GEN MILES t 1 DOES NOT CONSIDER HS 1 ON TRIAL T 1 4 j He Will Be the First Witness and Will Testify Concerning the Embalmed balmed Beef Charges Slumber of Officers Already On Hand Beef Packers I Evidence + Washington Feb ISThe court of inquiry in-quiry to examine into the beef charges j preferred by General Miles today went into executive session as soon as it assembled and proceeded with its work of selecting witnesses to be summoned and mapping out a plan of procedure A number of witnesses who will oe examined have reported among them being Colonel Powell and Major Lee or the Ninth infantry Captain Duncan ue the Twentyfirst infantry and Major Jackson of the Third caalry Several other officers are in the city and several sev-eral representatives of the beef concerns con-cerns whose product is in Question are here The probability is that the taking tak-ing of testimony will begin certainly on Monday when General Miles will be examined He will be looked to for a comprehensive statement of his charges and will be examined as to his statement before the war commission commis-sion and his alleged newspaper interviews inter-views His examination will be limited closely to his charges and th t basis of them and it is understood that should an attemnt bf mnrlft tr elicIt from him a statement as to whether he had entertained en-tertained any animus that it will beheld be-held he need not answer the questions propounded General Miles will be followed by other witnesses and upon whom he will rely for corroboration Following them will be examined witnesses who will be expected to refute the charges of the major general The privilege to be represented by council before the court will be exercised exer-cised by the beef concerns but it is not General Miles present intention to have counsel He does not consider himself him-self in the attitude of being on trial but merely called upon to present hits contentions in regard to the beef furnished fur-nished the army and to offer testimony to substantiate his position It is DOS sible that developments may arise that will make it wise for him to be represented repre-sented by counsel but at present he does not consider it likely The court when it concluded todays session announced that the first formal for-mal session would be held Monday arcl that the hearing of the testimony would begin then The court will meet at its quarters in the Lemon building at 10 oclock and will proceed to the White House where it will pay its respects tc the president From there it will go to the war department and will present itself formally to Secretary Alger and finally to General Miles major general commanding Returning at once to its rooms it will begin work In addition to the officers mentioned in the foregoing as being here to testify tes-tify among the others summoned and who will appear are Major A W Cor liss and Captain D L Harrell of the Seventh infantry Major A H Bowman of the Second infantry Captain Hughes of the Thirteenth infantry Lieutenant Colonel F H Liscum of the Twenty fourth infantry Brigadier General C D Viele and Major J 31 Bell of the First cavalry These officers were in either the Santiago or Porto Rico expedition expe-dition and are among those who have made reports upon the beef |
