Show New Story of 1 Abduction I lSt Paul Globe George Botvles who is ahead of the Alice Xielson Opera company told a I story last week that illustrates how once In the history of this mundane I sphere advertising didnt pay I seems that Mr Bowles was connected con-nected in a business capacity with the nCte I Anna Held company when the latter was playing a successful engagement in San Francisco a year or two ago Mr Tod Sloan was playing an equally I successful engagement at a San Francisco Fran-cisco race track The premier Jockey and the premier advance man were living liv-ing at the same noted and were on most friendly terms Derby day was coming and Sloan had a mount Mr Bowjes wanted to go out to the track and see his friend win He suggested to Mr Ziegfleld the manager of the company that it would be a good idea to g out in the companys private car and have Miss Held take a party of friends along The advertisttment would more than pay for the expense of the engine and other incidentals Mr Ziegfie thought the idea a good one 8 the day of the race saw the party bent on enjoyment and advertising start for the races Now i seems that for two or three mum before reaching the course the railroad track Is within sight of the grandstand and in order to get all the advertising possible out of the trip and attract the attention of the multitude the engineer was told to begin ting his whistle as soon as he came > within sight of the grandstand and keep it up till he reached the entrance gate The engineer followed instructions hove in tho The speclalhove sight just a horses had gone to the post for the derby but the frightened locomotive with the lone car attached attracted everybody as it was planned to do In the midst of the excitement the flag fell fellA minute and a half later theparty I which Mr Bowles was chaperoning rushed In just in time to see Sloans I mount beaten by half a length The excitement citement caused by the shrieking engine had unnerved both Sloan and his mount I and lest thean the derby Well your party won the Advertlsi Ing Handicap all right didnt I Mr Bowles was asked Oh we got all the advertising we wanted but we lest S 2000 that we bet rnte on Sloan the night before and it wasnt all Mr Ziegflelds money either |
