Show PLAN or INVESTIGATION i OUTLINED COMMITTtf SessIon ISA Postponed Until 9 Oclock Tomorrow Morning Law and McCune Have Been Notified to File Their Charges and Defense The Investigation committee met In the north committee room of the senate sen-ate chamber immediately after the dissolving dis-solving of the jojnt session An organization organ-ization was at once effected Senators Shurtliff being chosen chairman and Representative Cummings secretary of the committee Then an adjournment was taken until 430 p mAt m-At that hour the committee met again and spent an hour and a half perfecting perfect-Ing plans of procedure The question as to hether the investigation should I proceed behind closed doors or not was i very carefully camassed and the con I censu of opinion seemed to be that I it would be unfair I to the parties most I concerned and to the public as well to have the meetings secret However decision on the question was reserved until today but it is practically settled set-tled that at least representatives of the press will be admitted in order that the matter may reach the people of the I state and city undistorted It is scarcely scarce-ly likely that the general public will be admitted to the session because of i the enormous crowd that would retard the business of the committee I It was decided not to begin the investigation In-vestigation of the charges until Monday Mon-day morning at 9 oclock so as to give Mr McCune and Mr Law opportunity to prepare their cases Mr McCune sent word to the committee that he was anxious to have the investigation begin be-gin Immediately but the committee decided de-cided that it was better to defer action until Monday In fairness to both the Interested parties The following communication was prepared and sent to Mr Law Committee Room Utah State Legislature Legisla-ture Salt Lake City Feb 18 1S39 To Hon A A Law The committee of the joint assembly of the Utah state legislature appointed this day to investigate the charges of I attempted bribery made by you against the Hon A W McCune hereby re quires and directs that you file with said committee on or before Monday Feb 20 1S99 at 9 oclock a m a written I writ-ten statement of said charges and that you furnish a copy of the same to the trn euthJ eo said A W McCune not later than U l oclock noon Feb 19 IS99 1 And you are hereby notified to appear i before said committee on said 20th day I I of February at 9 oclock a m at the senate chamber of the legislature with I counsel if you so desire prepared to prove said charges O F WHITNEY Chairman Pro Tem Investigating Committee Com-mittee HORACE CUMMINGS Secretary To Mr McCune also a summons was sent in the following language Committee Room Utah State Legislature I Legisla-ture Salt Lake City Feb IS 1893 Hon A vV McCune The committee I of the joint assembly of the Utah state legislature appointed to investigate the charges of attempted bribery made against you by the Honorable A A maw liereoy requires and directs that you file with said committee on or before be-fore Monday Feb 20 1S99 at 9 oclock a m a written answer to said charges a copy of which the said A A Law has been directed to furnish you not later than 12 oclock noon Feb 19 1899 And you are hereby notified to appear ap-pear before said committee on said 20th day of February at 9 oclock a m at the senate chamber of the state legislature legis-lature with counsel if you so desire prepared to defend yourself against said charges 0 F WHITNEY Chairman Pro Tern Investigating CommitteeHORACE HORACE CUMMINGS Secretary Messrs Stewart Cummings and Whitney were made a committee of three to prepare rules of procedure for the investigation It was decided to employ an official stenographer lest any error should creep into the record |
