Show BEPUBLICA2T SPLIT 4 IMt I Pleasant Faction Will Join With the Democrats Special Correspondence I ML Pleasant Sept 29The Republican Republi-can party In this city is in as big n muddle over local questions and issues as It can very well be and hang together to-gether I fact it is pretty positive 3iovv that i cannot hang together during dur-ing the coming municipal campaign A portion of the members of the party 2iave already signified their intention of breakIng away from the regular party organization and identifying them sehe with a citizens ticket movement which is under way and which is sanctioned by the Democrats As soon as the citizens move began to be agitated and i was noised around that some prominent Republicans were backing it if not being wholly responsible respon-sible for i the Republican leaders began be-gan to beotlr themselves They called a meeting of all the members that could I be seen in a short time including those who were reported to be going astray and endeavored to smooth things over and It was a warm meeting Both bides the Republicans straight and the tipiitters bad representatives present who were not at all backward in expressing ex-pressing themselves and they didnt jnln e words at all The trouble with tite element which was desirous of withdrawing was as they stated it that th party was becoming corrupt that a certain element which they were pleased to term the saloon element had seen dominating the party for several years and that they did not deem this a proper condition of affairs prohibition prohibi-tion was also incidentally mixed up in the discussion Other subjects of like lke nature were brought in and all hands expressed themselves a they looked at tho matters But the desired harmony har-mony was not in evidence Rather til different fact ns were farther apart after the meeting than before I < A vote on a resolution favoring the I Insertion of a plank in the platform m I favor of clo = > restrictions for the saloons sa-loons and the submission of the prohibition prohI-bition question to a vote of the people vas favored by nearly all present a few I i vho failed to tee a remedy i this forth for-th evil oi saloon influence in the party I dissenting That the two elements cannot get together to-gether is certain now as there have I been two calls issued for caucuses one the Republicans straight and one by I I the citizens element and a number of prominent Democrats The citizens will stand for a general reform In politics in the municipality deeming that forte for-te towns best interests The Repub licans will go it straight Sir Pleas too ant will have a red hot city campaign |
