Show I ARID LAND PROBLEMS President Young Returns From the Irrigation Congress t SUCCESS THE MEETING + BEST SESSION THAT HAS YET BEEN HELD i Sentiment of the Congress Favored Reclamation of the Arid Lands By Government AidWhy Chicago C Chi-cago Was Selectea as the Place of Meeting Next Year 4 Dr Seymour B Young retiring president presi-dent of the adjourned National Irrigation congress and John R Murdoch of Beaver returned yesterday from Missoula Mont where the annual sessions were held Sept 25 26 and 27 President Young was extremely ex-tremely gratified with the work of the congress and enthusiastic over the expected expect-ed results The session this year said he was greatly In advance of any we have held heretofore There were eighty odd delegates dele-gates the largest number that has attended I at-tended and a more gratifyIng interest was shown In the work before us The pa TT TTTTY pers presented were of a better calibre I and the speeches proved more interesting The congress this year has certainly done a vast amount of work toward reclaiming the arid lands of the west That it was a dict year of progress was the general ver dictDr Dr Youngjiresented a highly commend ed paper on Irrigation in Utah Wyoming and Arizona in which he touched upon the improved conditions In this state the people having become more accustomed to the reservoir method of controlling waters a very important factor in the accomplishment of the prime object of the congress The Utah delegation and members from Washington Arizona Montana Nevada and Idaho Dr Young stated were very much put out by their forced absence from the first days ses sion due to late trains They were all present the second day Elwood Mead of Washington D C was elected president for the coming year and Chicago was chosen as the next meeting place Speaking of the choice Dr Young said t Paul tso Louis I and Spokane were I voted for by some btft the Chicago sup porters exceeded In numbers We belie edit best to choose Chicago because of its I commercial importance We want to gain the sympathy of the great centers in or tl itfo tne A aWo i der to facilitate our reaching the national congress with our petition to redeem the i I arid lands I The Irrigation congress continued Dr I i Young IS unanimous in recommending the retention of the arid lands by the government gov-ernment until such lands are redeemed by water furnished by government aid They then favor these lands being sold with water rights a limited number of acres to each applicant I i A number of Ltah delegates remained in I Montana to inspect Maicus Dalys mammoth mam-moth stock farm and famous apple orchard j or-chard in the Bitter Root country I |
