Show DICTATED THES P Reported to Have Controlled the Ogden Conference 4 e MADE THE NEW SCHEDULE MADJ BIO GRANDE WESTERN TAKEN AE TA OFF ITS GUARD The Oregon Short Line Will Put On a Train to Connect With the Two New Overlands It Will Leave Salt Lake City at 1145 a m Railroad Notes i 11 was rumored In railroad circles yesterday that the Southern Pacific in the schedule that it announced for the third train that is to be put on between Chicago and San Francisco Oct 15 has stolen a march upon the Rio Grande Western that 3s anything but agreeable to that ra ap The rumor gOes further and those who are in a position to know what they are talking a out declare de-clare that Mr HUntlngtons representatives represen-tatives dictated to the Union Pacific in the matter of the proposed schedule l that was adopted at the conference held In Ogden on Thursday It is a fact II hat It e officials of the Rio Grande were taken unawares and yesterday they were unable to state definitely what they propose to do to meet he I change 10 the schedule of the transcqn tinental trains The wise ones say that the Southern Pacific assumed control con-trol of the situation when it announced that a third tram would be operated over its line in four hours less time v than the present Overland but without with-out a third train there would be < no improvement This move was made upon the part of the Southern Pacific because of the fact that it fears the competition that will exist when the Santa Fe gets into San Francisco Inext January To offset this however E O McCormick passenger traffic manager man-ager of the Southern Pacific declares th thfE line and the Santa Fe are J practically partners in business and tgat there will be no cutting of rates S 7 A Diplomatic Move Be tnt as itmay thefocal railroad officials assert that the Southern Pacific Pa-cific 1st i i taking time by the forelock in the mat roC fighting any competition that may arise frOm the Santa Fe by bettring its schedule beyond all expectations I I ex-pectations Ii is a fact that the wind was completely taken out of Mr Lo maxs sails when he found that the Southern Pacific had practically ar fanged its schedule when the conference confer-ence convened and that there had tjeen made a reduction of about four hours on its running time from Ogden to San Francisco I is said that the Union Pacific people when they went up to the conference were only eons I Lering the third train as a possibility and that they had some ideas of their own regarding the schedule if it was ito be put on What they really wanted I want-ed was to get their present Overland train over Huntingtons line on better time but this was refused and the l only condition by which they could accomplish ac-complish their ends was to gee to the third train which alone is to have the fast through schedule from Ogden Og-den This was said to have been the ultimatum of the Southern f South-ern Pacific and bY it i railroad men here assert it has nut a most ieffective jcheckmatg upon the Santa Fe As > a matter of fact the Southern par pa-r in Ihsistingi upon a third train had f no alternative for having two feeders atf Ogden jln the Rio Grande Western and the Union Pacific the traffic that iItfs required to handle being far greater1 than that of the Union Pa qlfc which could attend to the business busi-ness with present trains Rio Grande Affected The greatest matter of importance J1 I with the putting on of the third train is I the effect that it will have upon the f schedules of the Rio Grande Western That of a necessity there must be changes made the officials of the line admit but what they will be they could not state yesterday except to say that thjy would meet all connections and keep up their end as far as Salt Lake City is concerned I Acting General Passenger Agent Helntz of the Rio Grande Western When asked what changes would be made by his road raid t The new tald to go into effect on Oct 15 was only submitted to me On Friday night And at present i is im j possible for ma to say what will be the changes upon our line I have dis j cussed the matter with Superintendent 1 1 Welby and wo arc now working upon the nw schedule that is to say we I 1 are doing some preliminary work regarding re-garding its formation but at present It would be mere guesswork for me tot to-t attempt to say what the new schedule will be 1 have notified the Burlington t Burling-ton Rock Island Denver thj Grande f and Santa Fe all of which are our connections con-nections of the new schedule upon the Union Pacific Southern Pacific and Chicago Northwestern and we will have to knov what they intend to do befdre we will have any idea of what will be our own schedule Our connections con-nections with these lines would not admit ad-mit of our going ahead and making a i schedule without consulting them I vilj say this much however and that is that we will have such a schedule as vtll enable us to keep up our excellent service We haVe1 always kept up with other roads and we will continue to do so In the matter of schedules A Probable Change Superintendent welby when een said that it would be only guesswork for him to venture to y at r sent yhat the nevfc schedule POt the Rio Grande sern Mil be I was l rU moredthat the Rio Grande would put on athird through train t that would I takethe pMce of No 9 tr is a stub train but Mr Heintz tlecjared that therewas no truth in any such rumor It is thought however that No 9 Which v s here for Ogden at 1230 p mt Will be taken off or else its t mot m-ot departure will be changed so as to allow it to reach Ogden in time to connect I con-nect with No 1 which is 1 the new overland over-land and which leaves Ogden for San Francisco at 123Q pj m Pacific time which Is the time thai No 9 arrives I at Ogden If this is done then No 9 will also make connection with Nd S which leaves for the west at 110 Pi m Pacific time just forty minutes f after the departure of No 1 Three Trains Each Way > Under the present schedule as put oh by the three transcontinental lines there will be three trains each way daily from Ogden No 5 whose schedule sched-ule east of Ogden was not given In the time table prepared at the conference held at Ogden on Friday is the fast mall that leaves Chicago at 10 p m daily On the run from Chicago to Omaha over the Chicago i Northwestern North-western this train does not carry any passengers but only the through mail When It reaches Omaha the Union Pacific Pa-cific 13 i allowed to attach two passenger passen-ger cpaches to it and the train continues con-tinues its fast run io Ogden arriving there about 140 p m Mountain time and attending only to through business From Ogden No1 which is the new train takes up the fast run carrying the through mail and passengers and No 5 follows it attending to the local malls and traffic Short Lines Change The only1 change that will be made in the present schedule of the Short Line was determined upon or practically prac-tically decided at a conference held last night between Vice President Ban i4 < Ii a 7 croft Traffic Manager Eccles and General Gen-eral Passenger Agent Burley AJnew train leaving here at ll45a m will be put on and this will connect nvith Nos 1 and 2 east and west bound at Ogden and also with No5 This train will bring to Salt Lake CJty the fast mall that comes into Ogden on No 5 and it will arrive in Salt Lake about 3 oclock This is the schedule of the Short Line people as they have mapped it out and the putting on of the 1145 a m train will be the only change that they will make in their present schedule sched-ule Otherwise the service between here and Ogden will remain as at present pres-ent This is the present intention but of course it may lbe changed between now and the time that the new Overland Over-land goes on |
