Detective Ketchum on redirect exam ination Ih7 I explanation of his answer to a question by the defence asking if he vyero an Interloper In this case said I am a United States deputy marshall Con nors told me that afterbelng hidden in a strawstack all day on June 27 he came out to a carrot peddlar where he met Mr Cook He acknowledged to mo that he threw the bundle containing the gun h Vd into the ditch at th 2 pkrc6 where he was arrested I had two conversations with Connor respecting the firing of his gun on the way down from ScoHeld He nrst said he aid not lire the gun and that It was not fired all the way down In the second conversation he said he fired the gun at a rat Connors told two different tOrIes about the depot grounds The defendant wore a black slouch hat at Helper Ablack slouch hat was here shown to the witness arid he said I think that is the same hat Proceeding he said I examined the grip belonging to Connors and found one corner of it broken and on examining it further discovered what seemed to be a htnall spot of blood under a magnifying glass it proved to be blood This discovery discov-ery ws made on July 7 The jury was shown the grip in ques tion and during investigation of It Con nors face was seen to flush perceptibly and a smjle overspread his countenance Detective Ketchum further stated that Dr Robinson had removed the blood with a knife and it was now in his possession Detective Brown was called for redirect examination and testified that he had heard defendant state that he had trauud his big gun to a sheepherder and after I waras mat ne lost the gun upon which MorriS returned toj him the oScallbre I I revolver He also herd Connors tell two i dUe ent stories about the firing of the gun on thetway down from Scoheld He I had examined Connors grip in company with Ketchum and others and found that the corner of said grip was broken and discovered a < lot of blood on It about the size of a 10centr piece Sheriff Storrs recalled testified to the r conversations with Connors as described I by Ketchum and Brown j He further said that Connors bad told him that on II the night of the killing he put the black hat he had been wearing in his grip and took out a white oneand put it on Continuing Con-tinuing faheriit biorrs sate hon LOtl took me aiter his arrest to the place where he claimed he hid his grip but it was not there It was afterward found I in a haystack on the old Fitzgerald l place in the west part of town I I asked Connorsl why he had lied tome to-me about where the grip was hidden ann l I he said he thought he might get a few dollars out of it and besides1 he did not want the black hat found The black hat Was lying in the grip on top ot other things when found A white hat was here presented in court and admitted by defendant to be the one he wore when he was arrested Witness also said he saw a bloodstain on the corner of Connors grip Dr Robinson of Utah county was next called to ihe witness lung and left ventricle ot the heart The neck wound had been made by a blow from behind and above and did notdenote the use of any metal instiumeiit It could not have been made with the grip Dr Robinson further testified tes-tified tha he had extracted the bullet which weighed 137 grains He had examined ex-amined Connors grip and scraped from It a red stain onequarter Inch in diameter and heavy the center which gave evi dence Of being1 a clot of blood A chem ical analvsls proved It to be such Crossexamined he said the particles found in the scrapings from the grip could not have been particles of the grip Court then adjourned till afternoon Dr Robinson recalled said the bullet Wound found in William Strong was fatal thought the body wag In a reclining post tion when It received the fatal shot Ort crossexamination he said I weighed other bWlet9 when 1 weighed the bullet from Strongrs body 38caiibre bullets of the same make varied some weighing 123 grains some 140 grains The ball from the body weighed Detecth Ketchum said The ball taken from Strongs body was a 3Scalibre by measurement At the time I questioned question-ed Connors pertaining to the trip here 1 questioned other prisoners one of them wajfMorrfi Connors partner Alorri told m < 5 that when lie came into Provo on the night of the killing he got oft the train on the south side and went over south to a bunch willows to hide his valise While there the officer came upon him arresfed hlhi and started with him toward to-ward the engine the train he had come In on that he broke and run away from the officer and went dOwn to the east end of the train and on through the fields to Springville where he was arrested about an hour and a half after he got away from tne officer at Provo Rosen Farrer Identified the clothing shown In court as the clothing worn by Officer Strong on the1 night of the killing The articles were given to the Jury who looked them over very carefully The relatives of the murdered man who were present left the court room while thd clothing Tas being exhibited The black bundle which Connors carried on th6 night of the tragedy and which takes such a part in the making up of the partner broke jail and that he had not been seen since that time Jailer Williams gave unimportant testimony tes-timony and the prosecution announced that it had no more witnesses to call I I The defense immediately took up its I side thecaset Frank Connors was the first witness to take the stand County Attorney Jacob Evans conducted the examination ex-amination Connors testimony was that Dr Robinson had stated at the preliminary prelimin-ary examination that he weighed the bullet bul-let taken from Strongs body and found its wetghtf wag 137 grains also that he weighed another 3calibrey bullet which lipped the scales at 147 grains 4 Jailer Williams vas called and said he know James Cannon who he aid did not visit the jail to see defendant while the keys to the jail were In his possession Sheriff Storrs testified that James Cannon Can-non did not se f Connors at the county jafl District Attorney King at this juncture stated that he did mot pretend to claim that Cannonwere he present would testify tes-tify that Connors was the man Officer Strong arrested 1 William Gage was sworn and gave testimony testi-mony as follows I live in Provo ore I street two blocks from Johnsons home on the corner of Third and I streets I went home from tho saloon along I street about 12S5 oclock oni the night Strong was killed I heard a gunsnot In the direction of Dr Pikes residence and was within 200 feet of I street at the time I stopped a few minutes and then went fly nih h n v hnme I looked east along Third street and heard sounds like someone whistling seemlngito come from a northeasterly direction di-rection I did not see anybody on my way homel Itwas about 1225 when the shot was fired I hardly think it possible for anyone to have gone down Third street and I atthat time without my seeing him yet It may have been done It was here agreed by counsel for both sides that if Mrs Mathews Miss Pike and Mrs Graham were In court as witnesses they woiftd say there was but one
