Show I HAPPENINGS INTHE WORLD OF SPORT ythng CHAPMAN C THE VICTOR I I Defeats John Lawson In Fiftymile Race CROWD NUMBERED 8000 MOST WONDERFUL RACE EVER SEEN IN SALT LAKE 4 i Distance Was Covered in 14348 Which Is Close to a Worlds Record Rec-ord Crowd Pilled the Seats and Packed the Center of the Arena Chapman Won By ITive Lengths Once again has John Chapman proven himself invincible Last night he defeated John Lawson by five wheel lengths in a fifty mile match race at the Salt Palace track before a crowd that was variously estimated at between be-tween 8000 and 9000 people I was the most wonderful race that Salt Lake has ever seen and i was wines nessed by the largest crowd that has nes athletic event in cr gathered at any athletc Cr the history of the city Chapman rode the fifty miles in 14948 which is within ffy mies Wal a little over a minute of Frank lers record of L4818 made at Balti more on Sept 9 1898 Never was such a interesting and exciting race seen in Salt Lake There whole a not a dull moment in the length of it Now one now the other ta ° ahead The changing of pace mak rs every few miles gave the men an portunlty to jockey for positions headwork ca ii time and the pretty eJ1 tl showed the way they fought for extry Inch of advantage kept the crowd up to howling pitch throughout the long race Crowd Was a Sight And the crowd itself was worth going miles to see For two hours before there the-re began every street car bound Palacewardf had been crowded to the footboards At 7 oclock an hour before be-fore the time of beginning the races the big arena had every available inch filled with excited humanity of space fled wih excied llmanitr And still they were coming The gates were besieged wit throngs that covered the streets with struggling hundreds They filled the twobit seats and then they overflowed into the reserved section sec-tion and took I by storm With every seat and every perching place which gave a view of the track occupied the greed of the management ought to have been satisfied lut I was not Director Di-rector General Colborn came panting and perspiring into the arena at 730 and consulted hurriedly with the officials of-ficials fdals Ive stopped the sale of seats he said but there are thousands outside that cannot get in Ill have to turn them in here Theres no place else lor them Let Them Into the Arena And against the protests of officials of-ficials and riders the crowd was allowed 1cals lowed to stream in In a second the riders entrance was vomiting forth people by the hundreds They came rushing from the outer darkness a though propelled by a catapult or ground out by some gigantic hopper Not men and boys alone either for full half of them were ladies A by magic the center of the amphitheatre was jammed with people until there was scarce elbow room left They surrounded sur-rounded the band until the musIc sounded as If it came out of the bottom of a barrel and they forced the officials I of-ficials to flee for safety to the press table Mounting it a upon an island I In the sea of people they clung there tgether thick standing until the frail structure gave way and let them down I again with a crash to the level of hol follol All through the race the crowd I sat or stood never once evincing signs j of weariness and thinking not for a moment of departing even though the race lasted all night Late I Starting With the difficulty in handling the crowd I was nearly 830 before the preliminary race a mile amateur I handicap was started The men were handicapped for a half mile but by a mistake in the programme they rode 1 a mile The limit man A E Wilson had but sixtyfive yards and of course i sLtfve I wa an easy race for Eddie Smith j f the scratch man He caught the others I I In three laps and finished three lengths to the good Lawrence Beck twenty I five yards and J M Hollister thirty I yards had an exciting race for second I race Beck winning by a bare tires width I was Hollisters first trSI and he Is evident u acquisition to thp amateur ranks for dispite the difficulty dif-ficulty he had in negotiating the sharp j curves he easily ran away from thee ethers the-e Smith and Beck The time < J o Big Race Is Called Caed Then came the big race for which the crowd had been waling The betting bet-ting had been heavy on the race all the week with the odds slightly in Law FU i s favor 10 to 9 for many did not bmeve that Chapman could ride fifty tnil < s and finish In any kind of shape Bth men were vociferously greeted wfaon they came out for their preliminary prelim-inary canter There was further delay in getting the crowd back from the trark and then Lawsons motorcycle vith Julius steering and Furman in the engineers seat came out and started start-ed around Chapman Takes the Lead Once twice it made the circuit and the pistol cracked and they were off 1 here wa a roar of greeting as Chapman Chap-man sprinted away and caught the rnutor Lawson taking on behind The frt quarter was covered in 3725 the b3f In 114 the three quarters in 140 and the mile in 21125 The second as a trifle slower a each was watching watch-Ing the other and Furman let them J i as they pleased The two miles were r t rr In 418 and then the pace be gn t > so faster for they flashed across the tape on the third mile in 626 and th < > fourth in 832 Ten Manager Shefski sent in Br is i and Weiler on tandem to relieve the monotony of the race This started the fun Lawson caught the tandem I ut Chapman was not satisfied to trail so he splinted past dropped down t the polE and forced Lawson away from the pace How the crowd did yell at that but Lawson was equal to the emergency and he too ran around and took the pace away while everybody roared gleefully Again did Chapman go around and this time Lawson let him keep the pace and he fell back to the rear of the procession For the five miles the time was 1040 33 and Chaf tel and Caine relieved Brazier and Wei ler Again the same spectacular jockeying jock-eying for positions took place Six miles were covered in 1246 and Tar vlde and Lawson came4n on a tandem lighting Position For several miles i was a constant hard fight for place while neither could have received much benefit of the pace The motorcycle came in on the eighth mile and the light was fierce Lawson finally securing the position in Its rear Chapman Deemed to be a bit weary here but the Swede was riding easily and seemed strong For the next six mile it WO 1 twnflv grind the pace I being Q trite slow apparently Lawson Law-son at least was not satisfied with It and he yelled several times to the motorcyclists to hit it up faster i On the fifteenth mile the motor went out and the tandem teams took its place and they in turn gave way to the motor at twentyone miles Chapman Chap-man caught I after many runarounds and just here Furman began to ride straight up with both hands extended at his sides so a to break all the wind possible The crowd thought it unfair at first but when it became apparent that this benefited the man at the reir of the procession nearly everyone w i satsfedDisplay Display of Jockeying The twentyfive mile post va passed in 5443 and right here began a display of jockeying that shoved the bitter ri valry of the men and the good head work of both Lawson was at the back and he tried several times to runaround run-around But Chapman would not have It As soon a Lawson drew up at his side Chapman left the motor and dart ed up on the track thus forcing Lawson Law-son almost to the raiL Then Chapman dropped back and caught the motor This was repeated several times to the huge delight of the crowd Chapman was ahead when the watches had ticked for exactly an hour so he wins the Utah hour record exactly 27 miles S80 yards The motor went out at twentyeight miles and there was some shouting by the crowd for the removal of Furman from the motor for many thought he had favored fav-ored Chapman But Referee Angell decided de-cIded not to interfere and Furman went on again when the motor picked up the pace o ° n the thirtyfourth mile The pace WA terrific here the thirtyfourth mile being covered in two minutes and all the miles from then on to the fortieth for-tieth in but little over For forty miles the time was 12729 I and here the crowd began to get wprked up Now one rider and now the other was ahead both ad taken a drink from bottles of water passed to them and both were strong and ready for the finish The Last Mile I When the last mile came the crowd broke into a spontaneous cheer and from then on to the finish the din was I hideous Lawson a ahead when the tandem drew out and for a lap they I loafed With the bell both started to sprint For half the distance Lawson led and then a though suddenly i i pushed by some unseen hand Chapman shot forward caught and passed the Swede and rolled over the tape a winner win-ner by five lengths Like mad men the crowd rushed onto the track and almost pulled Chapman from his wheel as he came around again Lawson ran into the mass of people and fell from his wheel and for a moment seemed to have fainted I Chapman was strong and walked jaun tily to his room Lawson had to behalf be-half carried thither I the privacy of their dressing rooms both expressed themselves a satisfied with the result Neither was at all distressed although Lawson was very weak Chapman seemed fit to ride fifty miles more 0 The Summary Here Is a table of the distances the winners of each mile and the time of each Miles Name Time 1 < Chapman 0211 25 2 Chapman
