Show DIVISION OF REPUBLICANS Many Republicans in this part of the world > do not seem to realize that the most radical opponents of an imperialistic imper-ialistic policy in the Philippines are to be found among the most honored members and leaders of th R publican party They have not all submitted to Hannas branding process nor do they all believe in this abandonment the pledges and pretensions of the administration admin-istration in relation to wars of conquest con-quest and territorial aggression There are Republican leaders just oldfashioned and courageous enough to deny the infallibility of Senator Hanna and question some of the policies poli-cies pursued by his puppet In the presidential presi-dential chair They often remind him of his solemn declarations upon assuming as-suming the office of chief executive of his subsequent utterances in messages to congress of the binding pledges of the people themselves made through their representatives In congress and approved by him in his official capacIty capac-Ity We want no wars of conquest we must avoid the evil of territorial aggression They remind him that Dewey deplores the war in the Philippines Philip-pines and says that a little tact would end it any day They cite General Funston as authority for the statement that common ense and diplomacy would have averted the war and will end it now sooner than continued hostilities hos-tilities will end t And these men are not atraid of war j they do not shirk Its responsibilities or dangers but like true soldiers and true Americans tlijy want to feel that their cause is just in every w ay The very strongest arraignment of I the presidents policy has been made by hcirstqeqtspolcyJas exSenator Edmunds of Vermont a I man whose knowledge of constitutional law and limitations whose loyalty to Republicanism and whose standing in 1epublicanis adlng the party no imperialist in his section will feel able to question Senators Hoar and Hale two of the founders and pillars of the Republican party are unqualifiedly opposed the retention reten-tion of the Philippines and both contend con-tend that the war could be and should be ended at once by giving the Filipinos Filipi-nos the assurance they have a right to expect of the independence to which they are entitled I any stronger sentiment sen-timent along this line has been expressed ex-pressed than those ofthese New England Eng-land Republicans we have not had our attention called to it Senator Mason of the socalled banner Republican Repub-lican state of Illinois does not see any necessity for a war on the Filipinos He says further I belieVe that if we had adopted a resolution in congress assuring those people as we assured the Cubans that we had no selfish designs de-signs upon them we never would have met with any opposition in the Philippines Philip-pines The fact is that we have given the Filipinos every reason to distrust us and they are lighting for their own liberty These are not the views of Democrats Demo-crats but of Republicans who haVe been honored repeatedly Republican constituents and who still occupy the highest legislative positions in the nation na-tion Congressman Henderson of Iowa the choice of his party for the next fcpeakership of the lower house of congress con-gress is a pronounced antiimperialist Thomas B Reed than whom no Republican Repub-lican stands higher who has done more for his party than any other living Republican Re-publican says that he sympathizes with the insurgents because they were goaded to desperation last winter and now they are fighting for a cause not infinitely higher than but as high as patriots ever fought for These are the views of Tom Reed He isnt a Democrat Demo-crat Ig he i copperhead Republican organs have a way of turning these quotations to one side by making silly attacks on Whltelaw Reid of the New York Tribune and a prominent Iowa Republican by the name of Henderson But it wont answer an-swer Here are Tom Reed and Hoar and Hale and Edmunds and Mason and a dozen of the most eminent men in the Republican party opposing imperialism im-perialism The Omaha Bee and all the leading Republican organs of the Pacific Pa-cific coast are opposed tQ it I is a policy that doesnt go down with old time Republicans of the Lincoln school I belongs exclusively to the Hanna school of politics And there are some prominent Republicans and many of the rank and file who really doubt the sagacity and statesmanship of Mark Hanna |
