| Show AN AWFUL FACT How a Reverend Describes the Famine ine in India Boston Feb 20The American board of missions has received a letter from Rev J S Hume of Bombay dated January 16 in which he says among other things The famine in India is an awful fact Last Sunday I visited a famine camp where men women and children have been gathered to keep them from wandering about and dying on the streets and in 1 the fields I am sorry to say that the policy adopted at this camp is to feed those who come to it only enough to keep them alive they Were they fed more generously would recover their strength more rapidly rap-Idly and would soon be able to work for their support While these poor creatures are suffering it does seem as if no one should rest one single hour unless he is doing what he can to relieve re-lieve all this terrible distress One of the best ways for us to help is for us to take the children whom we can get hold of into our schools Even small sums are of value at such times The plague still spreads and increases The health report for the past week estimates es-timates that the city has lost nearly tmates or fully onehalf of its census population popu-lation and that there has been a daily average of 170 deaths from plague I is now difficult to get servants and many shops and mills are closed |
