and then the case of Emma Salkleld vs William Salkleld was called and occupIed the remaInder of the afternoon without beIng concluded con-cluded and wilt be resumed this morning Ing This case was somewhat amusIng and the testmtrY was very conflicting conflict-Ing Cruelty and failure toprovide were the grounds named Mrs Sakleld was represented by Attorney Dan Harrington Harring-ton and the defendant by Attorney J H Ioyle THE PLAINTIFFS STORY The first witness called was the plaintiff plaIn-tiff who testfed that she and the defendant de-fendant were united In marriage In Salt Lake In the year 1884 and lived at Mill Creek thIs county They had l1 Crek three children She saId her husband never supported her and that she lived on what she could earn and the charity of her friends When she came to Sat Lake from England she brought 80 with her and that she had alt use up In living Her husband Sirs Salkleld saId had treated her with great cruelty cruel-ty got after ler with a razor two or ler three times and threatened to scalp her At other times he threatened she said to kilt her CrossexamIned by Mr Moyle the witness stuck substantially to her story She denied that she was the boss Sle the household and denied that she made her husband cook hIs own meals and do both hIs own and her washing When she left him ot the time the suIt wa begun she came to town and rented a house at 2 a week William SmIth a neighbor of theIrs at Mill Creek did not pay the rent of the house and had never been there She was not at all familiar wit SmIth and In fact knew very little of hIm Saw Smith ° 4ast just before she left her husband nadnt gone out walkIng with him On redirect examination wItness sad she began dIvorce proceedIng sIx years ago but on hIs promIsing to do better she withdrew I but he dId worse instead In-stead of better ThIs time he begged her to drop the divorce proceedIngs but she thought It would be useless and wouldnt take hIs promises any more The defendant had 28 acres of lad at East Mill Creek worth about 250 also farm Implements and stock CHILDREN AGAINST THE FATHER Benjamin Salkleld the 12yearold son of thd parties testified that hIs father two or three times got after his mother wIth a razor threatened to cut her throat On AOrl 7 of this year he threw hIs mother down on the floor beat her on the back and chest and dragged her from one room to another HIs fatber didnt do much work but allowed the glace to become overgrown with weeds Witness mother made most of the lv lag Witness didnt like his father because be-cause he was mean to him and the other children Never saw hIs father washing or cooking Marlntha Salkield agid 1 daughter of Mr and r Salkeld gave teBU mony substantially the same as her brother Benjamin Her father had a colored man to cultivate the farm He was too lazy to do It hImself r Esther Southan sister of Mrs Salkleld testified that Salleld was lazy and Idle and wouldnt work and contributed con-tributed notIng to the support of his family The testimony or this witness was substantially corroborative of Ir Saldeld DEFENDANT ELLS A DIFFERENT STORY WIlliam Salkleld the defendant a meek and mild looking elderly man lEtted that he worked hard for the support of hIs family Got UD at Sin the mornIng and worked till dark Hc wore aoor clothIng so poor that the neighbors talked about It Only spent 5 for clothln In one year He would buy a glass of beer once In three or four weeks All his money went to the support of his family He often helped his wife to cook The witness saId that the allegations of the crosscomolaint were true Mr Lund and BIshop alon told hIm to male the allegation of the crosscom plaint as black a possIble but to keep within the truth He saId hIs wife was very oerneartng In every way one I would not allow him sugar In hIs coffee cof-fee She saId I was too expensIve She he saId called hIm very vile names and I when angry was most abusIve He said she didnt have a dollar when she came I to Sal Lake and that he lent her sister sis-ter Irs Southan 200 to helD her In building a house Te money had ben all paId back He acknowledged having some sats wIth hIs wife and that he whipped the chltdron sometimes He denIed the razor balsode entirely and denIed that he ever threatened to kill her HIs wies testimony and that of the children he saId was manufactured manufac-tured falsehoods crts Given a Chance Ann Grifths was an applicant for a decree annulling her marriage with Waler CrUmhs on the grounds of drunkenness and failure to provide The evidence showed tat the defendant defend-ant was a lazy Idle drunken elow and contributed nothIng to the support of hIs wife and family of four chi dren drenhe defendant had fed an answer denying the allegations of hIs wies called he comlalnt but when caled upon was not present In court and hIs honor ordered that a subpoena Issue for hIm and further hearing went over until the can of the calendar Is completed Grifths appeared shrty after his case was passed but the court would cse not take I UD again until the end of the calendar wa reached t Mr Klein Gets 1 Decree In the case of Bertha Klein agaInst Samuel J Klein desertion and failure to support were the grounds on which divorce was sought The plaintiff testified that she and the defendant were married In 1882 and that her husband hus-band deserted her In 1892 and has contributed con-tributed nothIng to her support A Cohen corroborated the testimony I of Sirs KleIn and the defendant not appearing the decree was gated a prayed I Arnold vS Arnold Aold The next case was that of Lena I Arnold James Arnold Mrs Arnold 5 I I sad her marriage took place In 18iO She had six children four of whom I I are mInor Her husband had not supported sup-ported her for three years and she earned a living for herself by washing and Ironing Her husband spent most of his time In saloons was drunk most I of the time and was very abusive t her and the children when ha was I under the influence of Iquor Lena Arnold daughter ot the par > o o ties corroborated her mothers test mony Her father was sometimes sIck with rheumatism but mos of the time was able to wok but wouldnt Mrs Evelyn Evans and Robert Nevn testified to the drunkenness and nonsupport non-support The defendant was not pros eat and his honor ordered a subpoena 1s ds to issue for him and continued
