month for nine months as supervisor of drawing in the grade schools The committees recommen qaUons were finally adopted after a spirited discussion ann several mel factual efforts were made to modify the personnel of the plan proposed HOME TALENT FAVORED Mr WhIne opened the debate by announcing his opposition to the Im portaton of a drawln teacher when home talent of the highest excellence is avaiable He favored the substitution substitu-tion of John Hafen now employed in the Ogden schools for Mrs Elliott and made a motion to that effect Mr Newman concurred with Mr Whiney Only in Dart did 1r Giaulue agree with the two members mentioned He moved to substitute the name of 1r Hafen for Mr Harwod and 1r Har cods for Mrs Elliott The amendment amend-ment was accepted DR MILLSPAUGHS EXPOSITION In rconse to a request from Mr Wilson for his views Superintendent Mlllspaugh stated that teaching drawing draw-ing in the schools and teaching art to art pupils were two separate and Ide ly distinct maters The 8uperlntenuent 1 demonstrated that a drawing teacher should have a thorough knowldge of geography mathematics hlstQry literature lit-erature and kIndred subjects in order to vIvlf the study of such branches A person might be a fine artist but on account of his lack of pedagogical knowledge and want of experience asa as-a teacher In drawing his work would be a failure Wilson On being assured by Mr Moyle that Mrs Elott taught the correct system and not the Augsburg method Mr Newman announced himself ready to support the committees recornmenda ton committees report as presented was adopted only Mr Whitney voting in the negative NEW PRESIDENT AND VJCE Pfll IDENT Mr Simon Bamberger was present for the first time as Um successor to Charles Baldwin who recently resigned member of ed us president and as a the board llr Nelden proposed that Mr W F Colton the vice presldnt be chosen president Mr Crichlow seconded and amended to include 1r Newman as vice president 1 Mr Iol0 l wanted the mat r post pond a week and Mr Whitney who ezoressed deferred surprise also wanted action In reply to a query from the hiter Mr Nelden said the election of new f I ficers was not necessary now but I tcers bo payIng a deserved compliment I to the vice president Mr Moyle proposed Mr Newman for vice president This remark caused Mr Nelden to I say that I Mr Newman were already I the vice president he would readily support him for the vacant presidency I The motion to postpone the election I was lost by a vote of 7 to 2 A ballot resulted In six votes for Mr Colton for president and one for Mr I Newman The rules were then suspended and the clerk cast a unanimous ballot for Mr Newman for vIce president CHANGES IN COMMITTEES On resuming his scat and after
