MORE GOLDBUG BIGOTRY For morethan quarter of a century Republican newspapers have been railIng rail-Ing against the south working up prejudice pre-JUdice against southern people and tryIng try-Ing to create sectional strife for partisan parti-san purposes Now they are sneering at the west slurrihg the mIning states and comparing com-paring the people of such states to the I coolies and natives of the newly acquired ac-quired islands of the Pacific The New York Press is a typical gOldbug abolition protective tariff admInistration organ But it scents 1 danger to its pet theories in the recognition recog-nition of the colonies won from Spain It fears that the barbarians ofOceanica will prove as tractable as did the rebels of the reconstructed south or the free silver cranks of the west Among other complimentary things the Press saysWith With the imminent menace confront iflg us of Kanaka states Tagal states Moro states HispanonegroCarib states rUling us by deals with solid southern and silver mining states it seems to be no most childish form of trifling this outpour of Jeffersonian apothegms in illustration of the menace with which we confront the Tagals and Caribs in bringing theni civil and religious liberty Why waste sympathy sympa-thy on vassals when we are not at all certain as to which the vassals are to be these ieople5or ourselves If the goldbugs those of the Press caliber had their way about it perhaps the southern states the western states the Kanaka Tagal and Moro states would all be cut off without representation represen-tation The classificittion made by the Press shows the esteem in which the west and south are held by the goldbug I S press
