Color Question DETROIT Aug 4ThIs has been a proud flay in tbe history of the Grand Army of I i the Republic I has witnessed the grandest I grand-est parade in the history of the organization I organiza-tion and has made the twentyfifth or Silver ver encampment an occasion of magnificence magnifi-cence and grandeur surpassing the fondest I dreams cherished by its humble founder Dr Stevenson of Illinois twentyfive I years ago For six hours today under a I I bright sun 40000 veterans tramped sturdily stur-dily over the line of march and such was I the inspiration of the moment that oven the I I feeblest of the maimed and crippled comrades com-rades found themselves adequate to the ordeal or-deal of the march The firing of a salute from the United States steamship Michigan Michi-gan in the harbor announced to the waiting i veterans at 130 that the command to move I had been given by tho commanderinchief WhenGeneral Veazy appeared before the reviewing i re-viewing stand the vast concourse of people I clustered about the Campus Martus cheered I themselves hoarse Tho General reined up his charger General Alger and the Detroit I De-troit post his escort passed by him and drove up before the reviewing stand fronting front-ing it with arms at charge General Veazy looked on with a gratified smile then lifting lift-ing his hat gracefully from his brow allowed his horse to pass with slow step before them As he passed the reviewing i stand every occupant arose to bis feet t The foremost was General Miles of the I Mies wa Genera regular army who had been leaning over II I bareheaded with his white gloved hand I knotted over his sword hUt General I Veazy reached the end of the post and the I patriot veterans unfurled their flag and struck up a lively air and the crowd I I cheered once more General Veazy then I rode to the stand and dismounting entered I his box in front and the Detroit post passed by The parade continued toward tho mas sive war arch Besides the staff of the I commanderinchief there were on the reviewing re-viewing stand Secretary of War Proctor Secretajy of the Navy Tracy General Miles Assistant Secretary of the Interior II Bussey two cr three governors and a half dozen post commanderainchief On Illinois the home of Lincoln the home of Grant and Logan was conferred < the honor of the right of the line The survivors of post No 1 was a conspicuous I little group in the Illinois delegation and I j their appearance was the signal for cheers Department Commander Clark led the command and 3000 representatives of the I Sucker state were in line Among the prominent ones were Post General Pavoy I state auditor Colonel Sexton postmaster I at Chicago and Colonel Cochrane Thai I umbrella corps 3CKX strong wasTa feature of the Illinois flag As each division passed beneath the triumphal trium-phal arches little girls showered the veterans vet-erans with flowers The enthusiasm which greeted tho second sec-ond Wisconsin division TOO strong was unbounded In front and borne high in the air on the top of a flagstaff a perched Ole Abe the stuffed eagle which became part of Wisconsins history a quarter of a century ago In line with the Wisconsin boys were General Lucius Fairchild Clonel Weissert candidate for commanderinchief Department Commander Com-mander Upham was in command The Pennsylvania division came next 1500 strong marching In good order The Ohio delegation was a vast army of itself no less than thirteen thousand veterans veter-ans being in lne New York 2500 strong came next and was the recipient of an enthusiastic greeting greet-ing Then came a score of battle flags seamed and shot through The Connecticut division followed and after it came Massachusetts 2500 strong New Jersey was represented by forty veterans and 100 was the number from Maine I California showed up twentyfivo strong notwithstanding tbe distance they had to I come At their head with the post commander com-mander marched W R Smedburg whom the delegation is booming in such an enthusiastic en-thusiastic manner for the position of corn iianderincbief The post was officered by > Department Commander W H L Barnes Adjutant General L C Masteller field and QuartermasterGeneral It H Mar I feld1hen followed New Hampshire veterans and Rhode Island with small delegations The departments of tho Potomac with 5 men and Virginia 3 strong followed with Nebraska 5 veterans Department Commander Teeter commanding was seen with Governor Thayer on foot I Michigan with its llOOO veterans received re-ceived the ovation of the day The division was commanded by Department Commander Com-mander Eaton Iowa followed representatives of the I Wolverine state 300 strong marching to I the tune of Yankee Doodle I The twenty eight hundred veterans from j Indiana were greeted with cheers The department of Colorado and Wyoming Wyo-ming was headed by a zouavo drum corps The department had about one hundred men in lne Four hundred veterans of I Kansas led by Department Commander TImothy McCarthy represented the Grasshopper I Grass-hopper state and each carried upon his breast a Kansas G A R pin bearing the figure of this destructive little insect Oregon was but meagerly represented I Five hundred comrades from Kentucky were marshaled by Department Commander I Com-mander Hillis I West Virginia contributed O men to the t grand parade and Department Commander Duval led the division Post Department I Commander Haymond and Colonel C 1 t I Smith one of the trusted lieutenants of the gallant Custer wero in lne South Dakota I Da-kota though a small delegation made a I I id showing and were cordially splendid cordialy received re-ceived The Washington and Alaska department I depart-ment the mostdistant of all the subordinate subordi-nate divisions of tbe Grand Army of the II Republic were represented by a little group General W H Clayton led Arkansas Fifty men were in line of march The Florida delegation 150 strong came next under command of John H Webb I Eight men represented the infant state of Montana under command of Department Depart-ment Commander Simons The Lone Star state was represented by forty men led by Department Commander Com-mander Manntbo gallant commander of tho famous Second Illinois artillery On a flagstaff flag-staff in the first rank a pair of Texas horns seven feet from tip t tip was emblematic em-blematic of ono of the products of the state The Idaho delegation numbered twelve persons including United States Senator Shoup Department Commander Spofford and AdjutantGeneral Norman H Camp of Boise City A small body of veterans from Alabama Georgia and Florida were loudly cheered Tho naval veterans were also warmly received nava vercaso calved Tho Sons of Veterans 5QOO stronsr and in command of CommanderinCnief i L J Webb brought up tile rear of the long procession The spectacle of an oxPresident of the United States marching in the ranks is so unusual that the tremendous ovation tendered exPresident Hayes today was hardly a surprise Tho cheers which swept along the line of march like a huge but slowly rising tidal wave vas ever an indication of the presence of the distinguished President Mr Hayes a recognized by a a he marched with his post from Fremont Ohio down to Griswold street and near the intersection of Congress street He kissed several little girls who ran out to meet him The old gentleman carried a palm leaf fan and i appeared to enjoy the occasion quite a much a his comrade of tbo post As New York swept around the corners with their splendid banfl and drum corps and their armed guards for starters with their gleaming bayonets their appearance was always the signal for cheers but the I continentals with crooked hat and regimentals regi-mentals led by Uncle Sam himself took the crowd who cheered themselves hoarse I This unique band with its old looking drummers led the three solid platoons I bearing the old war colors of Now York The scream of tbo bagpipes of tho Twenty I II ninth New York playing The Campbells I Are Coming va beard from all points I Post Glengarrys carried two battered regimental mental flags The Pennsylvania division carried battle flags with the titles Spottsylvania and other i names of tho fields rendered im mona by tho terrible strife Storms of applause saluted these battle scarred colors ExPresident Hayes accompanied by Colonel E J locker and a committee that had purchased a 1000 diamond G A H badge for General Veazy called at the national na-tional department headquarters today to made a formal presentation The ceremony I took place in the largo parlor of the hotel where General Veazy stood with bis wife surrounded by his entire staff Com manderInChiof Veazy n said exPresi I dent Hayes the comrades who have been honored with a place on your stall have assigned mo the agreeable duty of presenting you this badge We ask you to accept it as a token of the esteem admiration and affection affec-tion in which you are held by by ourselves and comrades of tho Grand Army of the Republic It will wo think bring you and family joy remind you of the honor ble part you bore in the great event of this a ea sacred and stainless war for union and liberty Applause During your term of ottlce you have as you promised I s hen chosen kept between yourself and comrades nor only the touch of the elbow but the touch of the heart May this simple sim-ple fact remind you pleasantly of the events scenes and comradeship of the great conflict of the famous day ot Gettysburg the day of your opportunity of your honorable honor-able services and of your signal triumph May it be a well spring of gratifying meditations I medi-tations upon the future In after time they will be filled with gratitude that providence allotted them the inspiring privilege of tracing the origin of the man who in young manhood was a splendid figure in the decisive de-cisive battle of a divine war one Washington city The justico of this assertion may not be conceaew by the par Jsans of Lincoln Neb but tujuiry at the various department headquartersindicates that when the roll of states is called on for the location of the next encampment I Washington will get the prize by a vote of 2 5 to 1 I Various candidates for commanderin chief are pressing their claims with increased in-creased energy tonight Charles P Lincoln I Lin-coln of Washington D C assistant commissioner com-missioner of pensions has withdrawn from the race As it stands to night tho choice is between WeJosert of Wisconsin Smed WeJsert I berg of California Hurst of Ohio and Hodges of New York Weisserts candidacy candi-dacy is the only one that is sharply defined I as to states The west with the exception 1 of the Pacific coast is practically solid for 1 him The situation is complicated tonight to-night by the sudden extravagant claims of Ohio for Hurst and a rumor that Illinois may decide to present the name of exGov ernor Richard G Oglesby for commander inchief Tho race problem still looms up ominously and the question on every lip now is can this dispute b settled by the encampment without a serious disruption in the southern divisions The colored delegates from Louisiana will make a request re-quest to morrow to present their side of the case in an address to the encampment I Tonight va devoted
