Show A WOMANS HEADACHES Tho Four Kinds and their Causes Special Spe-cial Exorcises for Their Cure A wearied brain is the seat of an overcrowded over-crowded convention of bloodcells What has called the crowd together Perhaps the brain is too overfull of ideas Perhaps it is too empty Possibly Possi-bly some state of the eyes are to blame Or it may be the ears There is many a chance that catarrh has caused the mischief mis-chief And as for the heart the stomach stom-ach the intestines etc any one of these excites the brain to aching when its own cells fail to do their whole duty A woman who has headache long has probably asked her family physician the cause He may have given her bromides or opiates or phenacetin or pills of caffeine and she may have been blistered cupped and leeched and sven then she may have suffered for days with torturing headache I have not found that remedies to be taken cure headaches head-aches without fail I group headaches into four chief classes Neuralgic congestive con-gestive reflex headaches from eye strain I CONGESTIVE OR NEURALGIC The neuralgic is often rheumatic comes from a sudden cold perhaps is the result of a draught on the side of the head Sometimes it rises from an irritation of the filaments of the great casmrian gang lion which sends nerves and branches to all parts of the face and which sometimes becomes so irritated that it screws the facial muscles into knots with spasmodic seizures t On the other hand a congestive headache head-ache is the effect of a lack of tone of the muscular coat of the arteries These muscles become stretched lose their elasticity elas-ticity then dilate more and more to accommodate ac-commodate the blood pumped up into them Unless something is done at once to relieve the other pressure to turn some of this blood into larger vessels there will result a stoppage of the circulation circu-lation and apoplexy or paralysis The question very seriously should be asked Can a dose of medicine be taken Inwardly which shaH act only upon the arteries and reins of the brain In my own practice I have found it a thousand times better to prescribe exercises which shall so tone the whole muscular system I that eVery artery shall be made to contract con-tract with precision REFLEX HEADACHE What is a reflex headache It is any headache which is caused by an irritation in some other part of the body The pain in the head may be the one and only sensation j but somewhere there is a pressure an irritation of nerves whose only way of showing their discomfort discom-fort is through the central office in the brain Stars of all colors fall in showers before the eyes things around reel and spin Or perhaps one side of the head resounds re-sounds to the blows of imaginary hammers ham-mers while the other side is free from ache Or splitting pains dart from side to side Or dull heavy pains come and stay persistently WHEN IT IS FROM AN EYE STRAIN Eyestrain is the cause of most ot the headaches of childrensome are directly due to indigestion Astigmatism and hyper sthesla of the internal structures of the eyes cause intense in-tense pain in the brow but if the sufferer suf-ferer is a child and reads without difficulty diffi-culty the mother or teacher may not suspect sus-pect the true Cause Children who study by artificial light in a badly ventilated room and women who sit and sew all of the evening may well suspect eyestrain to bo tho cause of their headache If pain js constant they should consult an ophthalmologist Of course theN arc headaches not diw rectIy resulting from any of theso causes but from reasons as obscure as if the < headache Sphinx sent them as riddles There are a few general instruction that fit nearly all eases of womens headaches head-aches If the deprivation of tea or coffee for a meal causes headache she has a proof hather system has come to depend upon I the stimulus Milk water or cocoa should be used instead rlf her headache comes from bodily fatigue I I fa-tigue she must go to sleep though household house-hold cares be never so pressing If eyestrain or mindfatigue is the cause of the pain she mnst go for long walk in a quiet ul ce Usually hot loot bath a mild cathartic and a liquid diet are needed in treatment these are better than many of the new remedies for headache Let things go f is a very good motto I for a housekeeper with a headache Sleep in pure air eat and work in pure air Have good inlets for pure air in all rooms and as good outlets for the air i which has been used A woman may resort special exercises to relieve headache I EXERCISE FOR HEAD NEURALGIA She should have massage If she does not know anybody who can giro her massage mas-sage she can manipulate her own head stroke it gently from the center down the sides press it hard between her palms with a rotary motion pinch the little superficial I su-perficial nerves of the eyebrows I After that she is ready to take a few medical gymnastics with head and arms I a Position hands at the side heels I together Slowly bend the head backward back-ward and forward until the necK feels as limber asa rag dolls b Arms outward extended Fig 1 parallel with the shoulders Rotate the arms slowly rising on the toes and taking I tak-ing a long breath during the upward part I of the rotation EXERCISE FOR CONGESTIVE HEADACHES I Slow leg movements are needed The great vessels of the trunk and legs lust be well stretched to make room for I the blood which is distending the arteries and veins of the head while not enough I I is flowing through the fingers and toes to keep them warm I a Hands on hips fingers forward Bend the head backward and with eyes fixed on the ceiling Slowly raise the right leg rith kneebent keeping r steady balance Bend left knee and then straighten it alternately four times Fig 2 Change feet and repeat EXERCISE FOR NEURALGIC HEADACHE b Stand on the left foot with right I leg extended as horizontally as possible Then bend the left knee until you cannot sink any lower without losing your balance Fig 3 Slowly rise and change I feet and repeat c Stand with the left side against the I doorway bars or stair rail Place the I tips of the fingers together behind the I neck arms as horizontal as possible I Place the left foot between the two lowest bars or let it be firmly held then bend the body to the right aa fur as possible Fig 4 In this exercise the right side of the body should be no more trained than the left Always alternate carefully d Rotation of foot or hip in as large a circle as possible sitting Fig 5 e Hang from transom or top door bar and take kneeTjending exercise Fig 6 TREATMENT FOR REFLEX HEADACHES Reflex headaches requite special exorcises exor-cises to suit the organ in which the irritation irri-tation started If the liver is sluggish it needs some lively shaking or jolting If the kidneys are out of order the skin must be stimulated If the eyes are making the mischief they must be examined and fitted with glasses immediately KATE OAMBELL HURD M D Medical Director Brjn1 Gymnasium A Tune Brealsfast A great author once said Dinner parties are mere formalities but you ask a man to breakfast because you wish to sea him I think the most charming breakfast I have ever attended was one given in my own honor on a morning in June My hosts had decided to celebrate in that way our long friendship on the occasion oi setting up a home of their own The other guests were some interesting English Eng-lish people The home was a tiny corner fiat high up in an apartment house but it had all a homes cosiness and completeness Everything was bijou dainty but still the sense of the spaces and unconfined ness which belongs to the home idea was perfect I remember the charming urtains of that little drawingroom simpl6 Chester cotton in old blue and white gracefully poled and pinned in artistic folds and a cosy corner contrived by a certain airy arrangement of boxes over which were thrown Japan rugs and ou which were heaped oriential cushions Really the author and his violeteyed wife bad accomplish with little money as sweet a room as ever eyes rested upon Tho breakfast wag served at 10 A young maid in neat attire swung bad the folding doors and before us was a veritable summer feast The small din in room was in White and gold and so were the chairs the buffet and the standing stand-ing Japanese tray The curtains were a misty green and wJiite and time carpet was green and mossy The table itself wad large The cloth a delicate gray = 2 wr L L c J r and white was strewn with embroidered apple blossoms as were the napkins and mats as if the breeze had blown them in Allthe China was Japanese that delicate ware that is edged with black and gold and decorated with pink and white chrysanthemum chrys-anthemum At each plate lay a careless bunch of June roses tied with a ribbon It was in the very heart and heat of New York but the sense of airy country and morning dewiness could not have been more complete among the green New Hampshire hills Tho first course there were only five was strawberries on the stem eaten in the foreign fashion dipped one by one in powdered sugar they were selected large and sweet HALIBUT MAITRE DHOTEL I had my hostess way of cooking it afterward Cut three pounds of halibut into pieces three indies square Dip each in beaten egg then in sifted breadcrumbs bread-crumbs Fry in boiling lard to a rich brown Rub a heaping teaspoonful of butter to a cream add the juice of a lemon n tablespoonful of chopped parsley pars-ley salt and pepper mix and spread on the hot squares of halibut set in the oven just long enough to melt then serve Not difficult but delicious for summer breakfasts My hostess made this way the POTATO CROQUETTES which she servedwith the halibut To a quart of hot mashed potatoes add two tablespoonsful of butter a saltspoon of white pepper a speck of cayenne a teaspoonful tea-spoonful of salt a teaspoonful of celery salt a few drops of onion juice and the yokes of two eggs the egg is added after the hot mixture is beaten hard and has become slightly cool After mixing in the egg rnb through a sieve and add a vinegar and oil as liked The desert if that name may designate aught served at a breakfast was a JELLlHirCUSTARD Thiswas made T was told by beating eight eggs with half a pound of powdered sugar then adding a quart of milk and two teaspoonsful Q vanilla The mixture mix-ture was stirred over tho fire until it reached the boiling point but was not allowed to boil Half an ounce of gelatine gela-tine was dissolved in a little milk strained and added to the custard After it was strained it was poured into a mould to the depth of a half inch When firm this layer was covered with macaroons maca-roons cooked in sherry Then another layer of custard was poured in to jelly and more macaroons added and so on When firm i was turned out of the mould and served with whipped cream Cheese and crackers those good digesters di-gesters were served from beautiful white and gold dishes and on the table were two pretty jugs of iced tea slightly flavored with sugar and lemon juice with I floating slices of lemon It was an ideal summer morning breakfast break-fast but after all such a one as any friend may serve to a friend anywhere without much toil without much worry without much money MRS OLIVER BELT
