Show Illogical and Unjust Referring to tho brutal cases of lynching lynch-ing which have disgraced some of the cities of tho north as well as the south particularly the torture of a negro in Georgia the American disciple of Mohammed Mo-hammed who is engaged in trying to convert con-vert some of his countrymen to the faith of ISLAM exclaims and this is a Christian Chris-tian country We are inclined to think that Mr WEBB is not altogether just in his endeavor en-deavor to connect lynching with Christianity Chris-tianity We have heard of some very cruel things perpetrated by Moslems Is it not true that Christian missionaries have been butchered in the Orient by professed followers of Mohammed If the barbarities that shock society in this country are chargeable to Christianity then the cruelties practiced in Cceserea are to be debited to Islamism Is it not a iact that all such practices arc the result of a violation of Christian principles on the one hand and of the Mohammedan creed on the other Donot both systems teach tho very opposite of such actions Shall either of them be blamed for deeds done in violation of its injunctions and of its spirit It is the lack of conformity to Christian precepts that Is observable in the vices and crimes of people in what are called Christian countries Wo presume it is the same in relation to Islamism in Mohammedan Mo-hammedan countries There is nothing I in either creed that justifies or condones such wrongs but on the contrary they arc cond mned from both sources It may be that there is a lack of Christian Chris-tian influence in tho land that thero is not as much spiritual force in the forms of religion as is necessary to so impress men and women that they will be Christian Chris-tian in act as well as In profession But to charge upon any system evils that are wrought in direct hostility to its teachings is manifestly wrong and absurd In one sense this is a Christian country In another sense it is not The prevalent religions here are forms growing out ol what is commonly understood to be Christianity The laws and institutions insti-tutions of the land are more or less affected by their influence But this is not a Christian nation in a sectarian sense No religion is established estab-lished by law or recognized in the Constitution Con-stitution Nor do the majority of its citizens make formal profession of membership mem-bership in any of the various divisions of the Christian churches It is only in a general s nsd that the country can be called Christian The crime of lynching cannot be justly < J > 1 j 1 p charged to the country as Christian or nonChristian Itis contrary both to religion and to law There is no church that upholds it there is no state or national lhwor institution that permits it The evils thai prevail Un Christendom exist in spite of both law and gospel and are hargeable to human depravity not to any creed or system that seeks to suppress sup-press them Mohammed WEBB is in this I matter both illogical and unfair |
