Show SALT LAKE MUSIC Revival of the Proposition to Send the Tabernacle Choir to Chicago A Worlds Fair Representative Sent From Chicago to Conduct the Negotiations J Negotia-tions Musical Notes and Gossip The preparations to send the tabernacle choir to the Worlds fair for September 567 and 8 is being revived Upon these dates will be held a musical festival The management are particularly desirous of thetabernacle choir appearing and competing com-peting for the prizes 5000 and 1009 and hearing of the abandonment of the idea the managers concluded to send an embassy em-bassy an do everything in their power to encourage the choirs entrance for this competition The principal obfection has been the enormous expense entailed in the transportation trans-portation of a body of 250 singers In a conversation with Mr Gomer D Jones the gentleman sent from Chicago to request re-quest a reconsideration of the decision of this body of singers the gentleman remarked re-marked that all financial matters would be satisfactorily adjusted With the matter mat-ter of railroad fares theexpense would be trifling for the membersand the only obstacle ob-stacle it seems now is the consent of the conductor Prof Stephens to accompany them and abandon his arrangements already made for a tour of tho country Owing to the absence of the professor from the city his views could not be obtained ob-tained but the prevailing sentiment is that he will concur and givethe choir an opportunity to appear at the White city lhis body is thoroughly conversant with the numbers to be competed for and has been industriously engaged upon their study and would undoubtedly appear ap-pear favorably with their competitors The selections are Now the Impetuous Torrents Rise and Worthy is the Lamb from the Messiah The festival promises to eclipse anything heretofore attempted Professor W L Tomlins of the Apollo club Chicago Dr Gauer organist of Denver Col and the queens harpist J E Thomas have been engaged en-gaged as judges For these chorus prizes there have been entered two societies of Scranton Pa one for Wilksbarre Pa and the Western Reserve of Ohio Twelve entries have been made for the male chorus prize twentythree entries for solo woik and for the ladies chorus three one from Cardiff and two from America Departure of Musicians This month will witness the exodus of our leading musicians and matters musical musi-cal give promise of remaining in a quiescence quies-cence for several months at least Among those who will be missed are Professor Evan Stephens who leaves tomorrow for a brief visit to the Worlds fair and the east sailing July 1 from Gotham for Europe and returning in all probability about Sept 12 his object being recreation recrea-tion and study He will be accompanied by Mr Horace Ensign jr who probably proba-bly will remain in Europe studying music Mrs Plummer whose magnificent magnifi-cent soprano has charmed so many Salt Lake audiences departs June 12 to study I with Shakespeare Londons Greatest vocal teacher and expects to remain absent ab-sent one year Mrs J Greane so well known tcf the attendants of the Unitarian i church is already in Denver and diligently dili-gently at work withher tutor Major and Minor Prof H S Krousejs busily engaged in selecting voices for the organization of a choral society limited in membership to 100 The profeasor says sixtythree of this number have already been selected and have consented to aid in its successful success-ful issue Their first public appearance will occur next fall The societies expect the assistance an orchestra of twenty men and a first class production of classical classi-cal works may be looked for A reception will be tendered the new pastor Clarence T Brown of tho Congregational Con-gregational church in that edifice tomorrow to-morrow evening The musical pro gramme will be an excellent one Among I the soloists appearing will be Mrs A C Plummer soprano Professor Radchffe organist and W C Clive violinist I The pupils of the piano and delsarte departments de-partments of the Utah conservatory assisted by members of the faculty will I give a recital Saturday evening June i 10th in the recital hall Calders Music I Palace All interested are requested to call at the conservatory office Calders J Music Palace and get admission programs pro-grams The Chicago Ladies Quartette of which Miss Lincoln is a member have concluded con-cluded to terminate their season in Colorado Col-orado and in consequence will abandon their visit to Utah as previously arranged and announced in these columns S Willard Weihe the violinist arrived home Monday morning and is profuse in his praisea of the musical works and orchestral concerts he attended on his brief eastern sojourn Mr Weihe was absent a month I S A musical entertainment will be given at theSecond Ward Meeting house Thursday evening which promises to be of unusual interest Among the vocalists to appear I are Messrs Ashworth and Robinson both well known as lacal favorites I Prof H E Giles of Provo has concluded I con-cluded to take a musical course under Clarence H Eddy Chicagos most popular popu-lar organist The professor will depart for that city the latter part of this month The Union Glee club held an excellent meeting Friday evening Mr C J Thomas its conductor says the meetings will occur every week on that evening at the Assembly hall at 630 p m Ii Mrs V M C Silva succeeds Mrs J Greene as soprano of the Unitarian church choir and Mr A Beesley will succeed Mrs Parker as accompanist pending other arrangements S George D Pyper is tudying vocalism with B B Young the baritone formerly of this city but now a permanent resident of Chicago S The Harmony Glee club members serenaded ser-enaded their numerous friends Wednes day evening They meet tonight for rehearsal re-hearsal X The college of music has removed to their new apartments over Calders 3 Prof Karl Hill has opened his piano studio lathe Hooper building Alvin Beesley occupying his old station sta-tion at Calders music store W H Whitney will sing at St Pauls this morning |
