Show UTAH AT THE FAIR Salt lakers Greatly Disappointed byte by-te Meagre Display M Jennings Describes the Situation as He Found It and Thinks Something Should Be Done Frank W Jennings and wife with Mrs James and Mrs Taylor returned yesterday from Chicago and there is no denying the fact that every member of the party was disappointed with the Utah exhibit at the Worlds fair Mr Jennings who was for a short time the chief of the department of manufactures manufac-tures which position he resigned last winter was found by a HERALD reporter at the Templeton last evening I am direct from Chicago said Mr Jennings where spent lourteen days and all but one were devoted to the fair Taken altogether it is a most stupendous exhibition exhi-bition and its a liberal education to see it all No one can afford to miss it This is probably as good a time as any to see it ior the weather is fine and while all the exhibits are not placed they will never be missed I a person does not go soon it would probably be advisable to wait until fall when the weather will be coolHow How is the Utah exhibit Well rsphed Mr Jennings after evidently making up his mind to be as charitable as possible Its a disappoint ment The showing made here at our last territorial fair was so far superior to that made by us at Chicago that there is really no comparison to be made The mineral exhibit is a good one but it ida the mineral building They are the best features of our exhibit and when one finally reaches the Utah building the display dis-play cannot be other than disappointing Our manufacturing industries are not properly represented at all and in addition the exhibits are not displayed dis-played to good advantage The womens exhibit is about the only thing inthe Utah building that is worthy of attention and it could have been made much more attractive by the addition of a collection of china painting There is no fruit exhibit ex-hibit at all as the exhibit spoiled and a condemned The agricultural exhibit ex-hibit could be displayed to much better advantage than it is which is doubtless due to the fact that Mr Sanborn is not there The visitors to the fair take a lively interest in the Utah exhibit and go to the Utah building in flocks to see what sort of a showing the territory has made Like ourselves they are all disappointed dis-appointed with the meagre and jumbled up display there I dont want to find fault or blame anybody This may all have been unavoidable una-voidable but the fact remains that the exhibit does not begin to do justice to Utah It is possible that the defects maybe may-be remedied even at this late day The fair is only fairly opened as yet and as I said before some of the exhibits afc not fairly in place California has not yet opened and it is understood that these people are waiting for their fruits to ripen I we could manage to quickly augment our display by exhibits of stone brick cement plaster of paris salt coal China painting woolen goods fruits and other lines we could doubtless get them in before the real rush to the fair begins It would take some energetic work and the outlay of some money but it would pay us in the end SEQUEL TO TH BATTLE Blood No1 Wants to Challenge His Rival to a Fight to the Finish Last Sundays HERALD gave an account of a lively scrap between two young bloods at the corner of First West and i i Second South streets the casus belli being a fair young lady who resides in that vicinity In that encounter blood No1 who turns out to be Edward J Solomon I came in second best which may have been Sue to the fact that he was taken by surprise Be that as it may he is dead game and i is not his fault that a sequel to the affair of a week ago was not finished last night Solomon met Blood No2 who turns out to be Walter H Anderson with the fair one in question and he made it convenient to be at the latters gate when the couple appeared He then informed Anderson that he was ready to go ahead and settle the dispute go at once by a fight to a finish Anderson 1 agreed to this and went into the house 1 with the girl Solomon waited for his rival to appear until his patience was exhausted ex-hausted and finally reaching the conclusion I con-clusion that Anderson was not seeking a battle he sought a HERALD reporter and announced a burning desire to challenge I the other fellow to a finish or any other kind of a fight with or without gloves according to any rules or no rules for any amount of money or simply for I blood as his rival might elect |
