Show I THE UNEMPLOYED MEET AX ORDERLY AXD ENTHUSIASTIC GATHERING YESTERDAY A Number of Excellent Addresses 3Iide Permanent Organisation Effected and Resolutions Adopted Adop-ted An orderly and enthusiastic meeting of the workingmen was held yesterday afternoon in the Tunnel on Second South The meeting was called to order or-der at 2 oclock H E Carter being elected chairman and J B Rawlings secretary Three sergeantsatarms were elected but their duties were of a pleasant nature The first speaker was William H Sells who introduced a resolution and in fitting words showed the object of I the resolution to be to give work to the unemployed to give food fuel and I shelter in an acceptable way to the multitude of people who would otherwise other-wise be unworthy objects of charity Adam Paul was the next speaker and he also offered a resolution teeming teem-ing with good cheer to the idle laborer labor-er I Governor Arthur L Thomas was next introduced and In a calm cool way renewed I re-newed his pledge of fidelity to the cause of American labor and Amercal promised I prom-ised his hearty cooperation in any i i I move to give to the laborer an opportunity i j oppor-tunity to place himself beyond the 1 jurisdiction of the soup house He hoped for a better condition of affairs in the near future but the pressing I immediate demand of the destitute < people made plain to him the necessity I i neces-sity of concerted action and the time I was right now He was loudly applauded I ap-plauded and was honored by the meeting meet-ing by being placed as one of the committeemen com-mitteemen to take care of the resolutions resolu-tions passed by the meeting J L Morris was the next speaker and in an earnest way told to his fellow fel-low laborers his deep regrets at the possibility of such a gathering without with-out interfering with a single job of work showing plainly that the sea of I faces before him were those of idle men seeking work He sad he despised de-spised the thought of free soup houses and charity for able bodied men who were anxious to earn an honest living and could not find employment em-ployment Mr Morris spoke at some length and was duly appreciated by his hearers A committee was appointed to wait upon the Legislature and see that the objects of the meeting be carried out l was decided to resolve into permanent perma-nent organization and to this end H E Carter was elected permanent chairman and J B Rawlings permanent perma-nent secretary The committee com I osed of five to wait upon the Legislature Legis-lature consists of H E Carter Arthur Ar-thur L Thomas William Sells John Stubbs and Hugh Watson H E Carter addressed the assemblage assem-blage at some length and held his hearers hear-ers as ardent admirers his every word showing his earnestness and enthusiasm enthusi-asm In the interest of labor Mr Stubbs also enumerated some of his experiences in old England and finished by saying he deplored the idea of being called an Idle American laborer J B Rawlings next spoke and made an earnest appeal to the surging mass of humanity before him to be calm deliberative to be Americans to be guided by wisdom and moderation to see that the resolutions were properly cared for and to go home feeling proud of having assembled in so orderly order-ly a manner notwithstanding dire need confronted them upon every side I was decided to adjourn subject to the call of the chairman should it become necessary to further press the claims of the unemployed The following 1 resolutions were passed with a rousing vote after which the meeting adjourned ad-journed Whereas There is great distress among the laboring classes of this community com-munity that can only be relieved by charity or work And whereas this county is sorely in need of good roads and better means of transportation And whereas this county pays about onehalf the total tax of the territory Therefore be it resolved that i we earnestly earn-estly urge the legislature in esty now session ses-sion and the county selectmen of this county to take measures immediately to put one or more of our main thoroughfares to the county line in good condition thereby giving employment employ-ment to deserving and needy men Resolved That to further the above proposition a committee of five be appointed ap-pointed to confer with members of the legislature and urge the passage of an appropriation sufficient to carry out the suggestion also to wait suggeston upon our county selectmen and urge them to cooperate with the legislature in the above plan The following was also read and adopted Salt Lake City Utah Feb 10 1893 To the members of the Legislative Assembly of Utah Gentlemen We the undersigned a committee appointed by the Working mens Central Republican club of Salt Lake city to draft resolutions to your honorable body herewith present the following for your consideration Whereas The present financial condition con-dition of the country requires that strenuous efforts should be made by our law makers and others to provide for the working men of Utah to alleviate alle-viate the distresS in our midst Therefore be it resolved That we earnestly suggest that the recommendation recommenda-tion of our Governor in his message to your honorable body that an appropriation appropria-tion of 125000 be allpwed to build awing a-wing of the proposed capitol building be passed upon and adopted by the present sitting of the legislators and that a committee of taxpayers bona iide residents and practical workingmen
