Show I Through Diillcnltlci I The motto on the coat of arms of one state in the Union is ad astra per asperato the stars through diffieul I ties and the same might well be applied i II ap-plied to Popperton Place After a struggle with the government from i 1862 until 1S86 Charles Popper finally j I succeeded in having his title to the land i fixed by a special act of Congress and when we got it in 1888 it was called 41 call-ed Butcherville We changed the name the next day because you know Butcherville isnt a nice name for a fine locality It was then pretty hard I for the most imaginative mind to conceive con-ceive of its ever becoming Salt Lakes I great residence locality but we knew it would We knew that in time its I magnificent location would prove irresistible I I ir-resistible and so we have been working 1 work-ing along patiently on our plan of development de-velopment never doubting what the outcome would be and every year we have made a little progress We moved i 120000 cubic yards of dirt In building streets We acquired franchises across 1 the reservation and through the city i and an electric line was constructed I Bv the slow methods of municipal leg I islation we got the water mains extended ex-tended and one day saw with satis faction that they were filled with wa I tern of the high line system We built II 1 firstclass houses as models for others 116 follow and we restrained the temp 1 tation frequently offered us to sell pots without the building conditions in the deeds and so in one way and another an-other I little by little In the face of dif ficulties the day at last dawned when I Popperton Place had every essential for settlement and then we commenced to tell the people about it We have written thousands of lines about its attractions We have pounded out the I i undying truth about Popperton with patience and persistency We have made it the best known locality in Salt Lake and although it has cost thousands thou-sands of dollars to uo it we at last I have the satisfaction to know that we can go down the street without fear of the individual who used to ask I Where is this Popperton Place Now children cry for it mothers and wives pine for it and men look towards to-wards it as the ideal home site |
