| Show THI3 UTE REMOVAL SCHEME The Durango Herald is very anxious that the Colorado Utes shall be removed re-moved to Utah It calls loudly for the ratification of the treaty which has been hanging fire for five or six years and appears to be quite sanguine that this willperhapsbe accomplished One of its remarks on this point is cute but comical It says The latest news from Washington is of an encouraging nature The Utes will go to Utahproviding Congress says so Precisely If Congress says so But theres the rub Congress will not say so if justice arid good sense prevail pre-vail and if the Delegate from Utah meets with his usual success There is no earthly reason why Utah should be made the dumping ground for the refuse re-fuse savaces of Colorado The Duran go Herald seem to think that it ought to be done for very little if any I protest was made by the people of Utah That is not correct But if it were and even if no protest at all was made why should not Colorado take care of its own Indians Utah doesnt want them and doesnt need them The impudence im-pudence behind the movement is simply sim-ply astonishing Because a state wants to rid itself of a nuisance it cannot abate it must shovel It over on to a territory which can make no such protest pro-test as might come from a state having hav-ing a voice in national affairs But Utah has protested vigorously from the beginning of the project And the Durango Herald realizes the fact that Delegate Rawlins is solidly in the way now It says Delegate Rawlins made the statement state-ment before the House subcommittee that the taxable property of San Juan county where it Is intended to remove the Uteb aggregated several hundred thousand dollars and presented affidavits affida-vits of several hundred alleged settlers to the effect that it would mean ruin to them to he compelled to move at this time Where the people who made the alleged affidavits reside no one can tell because it is a Well known fact to every one acquainted with the Country that there are not that many settlers in the county occupying lands on the proposed reservation That paper is mistaken It is evident that its editor has not visited San Juan county Utah which was organized organ-ized because of the number of bona fide settlers in that region The petition peti-tion and affidavits are genuine The loss to the farmers and ranchmen there would be immense Their property has I been in constant jeopardy from the insecurity as to us permanence ever since the snadow of the Indian removal re-moval has been cast upon It There are not only the lands and settlements on the spot of the proposed reservation but those that are in close proxmity to it that would be affected by the transfer That paper says further From Mr Rawlins talk it was easily eas-ily discernible that the power behind the throne was the lIttsburg Cattle company cTliat all his information had been furnished by an interested agency and that it had been decided to niakeLthe light solely in the interests inter-ests of the whites who lived in that section That is another great mistake The people who have sent in their protests from time to time and who are represented repre-sented by Mr Rawilns are principally old = and respected citizens of Utah well known in this city and adjacent settlements who colonized the San i Juan country as permanent residents I and who have no connection with the I company referred to They object to i I I having Colorados rejected redskins forced upon their possessions to which they have squatters rights and which j they have f improved and made their homes Tfyey have a claim to consideration consid-eration and if it comes < to the worst to adequate compensation The Durango Herald remarks with ail assumed tone of confidence but an I evident feeling of fear that while Jt is confident tpf the outcome for removal i lit fully realizes J that a determined of 1 j Ci fort is being made by the opponents of the treaty as they realize that if the bill is defeated at this timeit ends the removal bill for all time to come so far as the present treaty Is concerned That is correct If the treaty is now defeated that means the end of the whole business UtahTwill soon be a state With influence equal to that of Colorado and able to kick as sturdily against the outrage as its neighbor might be to clamor for its perpetration perpetra-tion We have confidence that the removal re-moval movement will be defeated because be-cause Utah has right on her side and j Rawlins is in the front to fight the I scheme to the death |
