| Show HOYT SHERMAN RETIRES His Excellent Record as Recerer of the Land OHice At the close of business hours yesterday yester-day the official term of rot Sherman jr as receiver of the United States Salt Lake district land office Utah closed Mr Sherman was appointed by President Harrfson in June 1889 serving nearly five years He had under his imnmediate charge the mining branch of the land office as well as the entire supervision of the intricate accounts pertaining to the receipt re-ceipt and disbursement of all moneys and financial matters connected with the office Over half a million of dollars dol-lars passed through his hands during his official incumbency yet his accounts were kept in such a businesslike manor n man-or that with the closing of business hours yesterday they balanced to a penny Mr Shermans administration has been a clean intelligent one he was diligent in the discharge of his official duties ever courteous always at his post and now retires enjoying the fullest full-est confidence of the numerous applicants appli-cants for title to the public lands and mines We can testify that as a political opponent Mr Sherman is a shrewd hard fighter but in business or in the execution of a public trust an honest capable upright man Mr Sherman was a resident of Utah for several years prior to his appointment appoint-ment in the government service He has valuable property Interests here and will continue his residence in Utah having an abiding faith in her future progress and prosperity After a brief vacation he will engage en-gage in business enterprise and his i friends will wish him the full measure of success In this The Herald joins as sincerely as any of them |
