| Show Death of a htrance Recluse Special to THE HERALD Examiner Dispatch NEW YORK Feb 15Henry Tenbroeck Gammage 87 years of age a recluso and a classmate of exSenator Evarts at Yale was found dead yesterday in his room in the building of the University of the City of New York where he has lived among his collection of paintings for the past fortynine years Death was duo to natural causes Tho body was found with the head resting on the top of a lighted oil stove and the flesh on the face was burned T off to the bone Very little is known about the man No one was permitted inside his roem His barnlike apartment wa illuminated only by a skylight and was t fled from floor to ceiling with paintings and portraits in rusty frames said to have been in many instances the genuine originals origin-als ot old masters Dustcovered statues and placques and medallions black with age and dirt adorned the corners of the room No letters came to the old man oftener than once in a month or two and these were usually from the Rev Dr H S Gardner of New Milford Pa and ho is the I known only friend Gammage had so far as i |
