Min-eral lalnt Salt Asphaltnm Etc in the Great Utah Basin The following appeared in the New York World of last Sunday and is valuable as re llectiug the opinion of that great journal on our thriving city SALT LAKE Crrr May 2SIt is impossible impos-sible without personal inspection realize the great magnificent natural advantages of the great Salt Lake basin of the famous territory of Utah The vast fertile valley val-ley of the Jordan extending seven hundred miles in length by more than one hundred in width produces in rare luxuriance all the fruits of the temperate and tropical zones The mountains are to the world of today what California was to the world off fifty of-f years ago for the enterprising miners of Utah have discovered many of the most productive mines ot every kind in the heart of the snowclad Wasatch range A few months ago cthe people of the F United States began to realize that Salt Lake city was the natural centre in which the business of developing these vast resources re-sources must be carried on Consequently a large number of people made their way hither and the work of building a great city began New business blocks were planned and are now being erected New hotels are to be built House lots were platted In line the work of providing the wants of the 200000 people who will soon take advantage ad-vantage of the chances for business prosperity J pros-perity is now ocing carried out by the 50000 people who are now gathered in this J prosperous western city SALT LAKE A SUMMER KESORT Salt Lako city is sure to be tbe greatest summer resort in the United States Its altitude 4000 feet is above the level where nervous diseases and heart troubles originate and the air has the dryness and tonic effect which cure pulmonary complaints f com-plaints Its streets lined with shade trees I give the scenic effect of that public gardening garden-ing which is so little known in other new communities Its wonderful natural hot springs have attracted worldwide attention atten-tion for the beneficial effect of the water upon the skin is as well known as is the luxury and enjoyment of a bath in this water heated by everburning ilames in the bowels of the earth The Great baIt Lake is of course the big attraction to every one who visits Salt Lake city This body of water or blue about seventyfive miles long by fifty miles wide is located eighteen miles away from the city or a half hours ride by rail on the narrowgauge railroad owned and operated by the Union Prcilic railroad Uh5s ride is one or the pleasantest parts of the top for one travels in observation cars and has a chance to enjoy the mountain and > valley scenery peculiar to beautiful Utah On either side one sees umbcrless cattle and horses browsing in the rich alfalfa grass while further away are the green uplands and beyond them are the mountains rising to thepoint where the snow never melts Arriving at Garfield Beach one of the few points on the lake where good bathing is possible one sees the pretty pavilions ana Bathhouses and then if wise dons his bath ing suit and goes in for a float Wading out I into deep water being careful not to let brine get into the mouth or eyes one leans Backward and finds to his surprise that he I cannot sink The only exertion necessary is to retain the equilibrium That done the head and chest keep above the water like the floater on a boys fishing line It is easy to understand the benefits which consumptives derive from visits to the lake A handkerchief held in the salt laden breeze for a half hour is so coated jfc with salt that you can write your name on itwith the forefinger Now as it s well known that salt is the specific for consump tion it is plain that with every breath of this air the patient covers blsluxcs with a licaling film of bacleriadebtroying salt There is a rare chance for some enterprising enter-prising man to make a fortune by erecting a hotel and sanitarium at Garfield Beach At present there is none there and the thousands who visit the lake every year arc obliged to stay in the city instead of having a chance to enjoy summer days and nights continuously along the shore of the great Salt Lake SOCIAL CONDITIONS Salt Lake city is a uniquely moral community com-munity The entire abolition of the pecu liar institution founded in Utah by the wellknown religious sect has been fol lowed by the demand on the part of that I sect that the government shall enforce public and private morality Conseiuently = Salt Lake City is the one place in the west where gambling houses ana other infarmous places are not tolerated and where life and property are U5 safe if not safer than in any other city in the United States The outcasts of society have no place there and the people sociable like all westerners are of the best classes to be found anywhere Salt Lake city Las two good theatres several firstclass hotels plenty of good schools and churches four daily papers electric lights gas electric street railroads rail-roads and all other conveniences and necessaries of city life Its hanks national and private have a standing all over the United States and its clearing house I recently railroads rail-roads the Union Pacific tb Union Pacific extension the Denver Rio Grande Western and the Utah Central insure its remaining as it now is the attributing centre of this immense territory Its water supply is good The sanitary conditions of the city arc rapidly improving The ta = rate is reasonable Hence it is plaiu that Salt Lake city which has never boomed in the ordinary sense of the City and San Francisco MIXES AND MINING Mining industry leads in Utah and no I wonder for there are three silver mines with ofuces in Salt Lake city each which gays monthly dividends of50 per cent upon capital stocks averaging 873000 In every i mining and real estate office one sees promising l prom-ising specimens of gold silver copper and i lead ores More wonderful still there are mines of mineral rubber mineral parafline mineral paint asphaltum as well as fireclay fire-clay magnesia salt and other common metals The railroads are rapidly opening up the country in which these natural riches lie buried and It is only a question of a brief time when they will be made available by transportation facilities In i anticipation of this a mining and stock exchange ex-change has been organized to carry on the work of establishing permanent values for mining and manufacturing properties HEAL ESTATE VALUES Real estate is just now the most important J impor-tant business in Salt lfe do their business get tho money to build the new business houses plat the lots and streets and in fine settle just where and how the city is to grow They havo a splendid chance for success too for with few exceptions the buildings upon the main business streets of the city aro sold and must be replaced by others better suited to the demands of modern business In this alone they have an opportunity op-portunity to offer capitalists that ideal investment in-vestment bottom mortgages at S to 10 percent per-cent on improved city business property situated in the main business streets Then too rents arc high in Salt Lake city and houses aro very scarce Consequently the real estate men are building houses for renting purposes and arc making money rapidly l by the operation Land
